well my buddy has a 67 chevy truck with a 355 that he just g0t d0ne rest0ring recently. he had a sh0p build a m0t0r and put it in. well we checked the timing the 0ther day and with vacuum 0ff and its at 22* at idle. vacuum advance 0n its at 44* at idle. if y0u rev the m0t0r up, it ends up g0ing 0ff the scale and the timing light st0ps w0rking. the timing light is the kind that y0u can dial in the advance and it g0es all the way t0 60*. we didnt have time t0 adjust the timing but im thinking ab0ut setting it at ab0ut 10 degrees vacuum 0ff. spec f0r a st0ck 350 is 6-8 but this car has a cam in it and 327 heads. i was just w0ndering what y0u guys th0ught 0f the timing deal. s0rry its n0t a mustang but i figured y0u guys c0uld figure it 0ut. thanks

not positive here, but with an advance timing light, you should set it at zero to check base timing (with vacuum line removed), and then set to that base when checking advanced timing (or zero to check total advance) with vac line attatched.
is that how you did it? or did you have the light set to something other than zero when you got that 22* reading?

If you're not sure about the timing light and don't have the manual for it, just use a regular one and pick up some timing tape[any auto parts store should have it]. It has all the timing marks on it and you just stick it on the flywheel so you can check the total timing with it the old fashioned way. Set the intial timing at about 8 degrees and have a total of 38-42[by using the adjustable vacuum if you have one or with the mechanical weights in the distributor], that will give you a good starting point anyway.
