Looks like Mustang will be in the nationwide series next year. It's about time the mustang was in there. I wonder how they are going to fit that old technology, (351 Cleveland w/carburetor) into the new hoss. How about a 4V 5.4 with a carburetor. Now that would look funny and cool at the same time.

yeah, I heard about that but I dont get it. A NASCAR is a NASCAR. It does not matter what headlight stickers you slap on the front. It made just as little sense when they were fusions. Just walk into a dealer and ask:

"Ah yes, I would like to buy the 351 Cleveland Fusion I saw win the race on Sunday."

Sock car racing was cool when they were STOCK cars. Now there just really fast cars with huge old engines. Freakin impressive, but not stock.

It'll still sell Mustangs, I'm sure. Just like it sold Monte Carlos.

Yea. I have written several letters to the France Family asking them to do just one race were the body panels come from a local dealers parts been. I’ve seen a picture of the Nascar Mustang, It looks like a mustang. Ford and GM both make a 4.6 V8, it wouldn't be hard to have Chrysler and Yota make one also. The engine compartment is in GMs favor now as they get to run Basically a ZO6 engine with a carb, Chrysler has a hybrid engine and yota also has a hybrid, Now Ford gets to run the 351 Cleveland. The 351 is a good motor but come on, the last 351 Cleveland wasn't even made in this millennium, century or decade. I guess that if nascar let ford run a bored and stroked 4 valve 5.4 to make 350 cubic inches it wouldn't be much of a race when all the GMs, Dodge's and Yotas are all so far behind that the ford pull into the pits to give it a wax job before going to victory lane like the Cobra team did the first time they went to the 24hours of Daytona.

I love the idea! Granted it looks different, but it helps get the name out more...The Stang needs more exposure? No, but every bit helps! The NASCAR Stang will look a lot closer to the street version compared to a funny car Stang!

Believe it or not, the Fusion "COT" uses actual aluminum hood and trunk skins directly from Ford. The same as every production Fusion

I agree. I think it looks quite a bit like the Mustang. I was happy to see it didn't look like every other Nascar with a Mustang grill on it.

Are you guys talking about this?

To my eyes that looks nothing like a Mustang. Which is why I watch the KONI challenge. I would love to see actual Mustangs, like the FR500, in a Nascar oval, but not this monstrosity.

The trouble with the mustang and 220mph speeds at Talladega, Daytona and Pocono, aero it wouldn't go that fast. And if somehow you could make it go that fast the hood would come off or it would flip over. A nascar car has to look like it does or it can't compete. Now if they all used non aero body panels, the race would be slower, but better to watch.

I'm sorry, but none of your posts other than possibly the last one have made much sense, and the Nationwide cars dont go anywhere near 220 mph. You ask how they are going to fit a 351 Cleveland in a Mustang. Have you seen the inside of a stock car? It is not going to be an actual Mustang, it will be a tube frame car just like any other stock car, and every manufacturer uses a OHV 358 ci V8. The engines have very little in common with any production engine, Ford doesn't even make a pushrod V8 any more, Toyota never has that I know of. The chevy engine is not a LS7 with a carb, it's a 7.0L. They all use basically the same frame and powertrain because that is what NASCAR allows. It would be very difficult to keep the cars competitive if they all got to use a different engine configuration, they would have to all use different size restrictor plates to keep them even, so they would end up in the same boat as they are now.

Well, it'd be awesome if they all looked like FR500's or something. Unfortunately, that's not an option. But it resembles a Mustang much better than the Fusion resembled a Fusion.

That it does. It actually kinda looks like a Monte Carlo, which is why I think Nascar helped sell MCs. The Monte Carlo is a car designed to look like a Nascar, instead of the other way around. I do applaud the Nascar mustnag for making an effort, but I think Nascar is on it way out, because it has gotten too far from actual cars that we know and love. I understand why, as racing gets more competitive, its very tempting to enact rules that keep everyone at the same level, and make things more safe... and faster. But that does not change the fact that a Nascar is just as alien as an F1 car.

I love the idea of top speed racing (Nascar Ovals), but I would prefer it if it were top speed of actual stock cars. Much more interesting. I understand the FR500 would flip over or get torn apart at Nascar speeds, so... well just have to go slower, say, at the FR500s top speed. As a fan, you really cant tell the difference between 170 and 200 anyway.

I think most people who watch Nascar watched it in the 70s, so they got to see the cars evolve from stock, and it makes sense. For me, as a child of the eithies, they have always been exotic cars like anything else. The thrill of racing is in seeing your dads car go fast, and that has not happened since the original Nascars, or... in the Koni challenge that I keep bringing up. That is the future. I predict Koni will be as popular as Nascar in about 30 years. Unless... Nascar could change the rules and go back to actual stock cars, that would be cool.

I just don't know were to begin.
1st ford nascar engine is a 351 cleveland engine, Ford has not made a pushrod engine for a long time. All Nascar engines are overhead valve engines that is unless you meant overhead Cam engine, then no. Even DOHC engines are OHV engines.
In order for a nationwide qualifying time to be 195 MPH they have to be going faster in the straightaway (Daytona) or 191 at Atlanta.
No one has a NASCAR rule book so what you say makes no sense also.
Sense 1991 ford has run a 351 Cleveland with some different head intake variations until 2009 when they FINALLY got to run a new engine the FR9' This engine uses none of the 351 parts or specs.
GM on the other hand has run up until 1998 the SB2 , and in 1998 GM made a R99, R03, and R05 all of which NASCAR disapproved. Then Nascar allowed the R07. The R07 was the first clean-sheet engine design by GM Racing for NASCAR competition. So in 1998 GM had a complete race engine and Ford had the 351 Cleveland with different heads and intake. 2009 is the first year Ford has a complete race engine. Ford has always got the short end of the stick when it comes to nascar rules, unless you think the rules are the same for everyone, then I say Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha.

You would have to race at track no more that 3/4 mile. Any bigger and aero and down force comes into play to much. But that would be ok with me. I think Daytona just suucs and my grandmother could drive Talladega. Bristol Martinsville, Dover , and the road courses all would be awesome with "Stock" cars. The real problem is MONEY. NASCAR gets $300,000,000.oo a year from Sprint to have the series called the SPRINT CUP SERIES. There are probably more GM people in the stands that Ford people so NASCAR has to cater to GM people if it wants to fill those seats. GM fans root for Jr. for some reason and they buy a lot of stuff. Nascar is not interested in fair or equal rules, It wants its bright and shinny boys to win, Jr, Gordon, Johnson, etc. The France family have a large investment in General Motors and do not want their investment hurt. Fair and equal is just a front. I seen Terry labonte win his last race, he was driving for Kellogg’s. A week before the race Kellogg’s advised Nascar they would be pulling out of racing at the end of the year. The end of the race everyone pitted because of gas mileage, Terry stayed out with some 20 something laps to go the announcers figured from his last pit stop to the end of the race Terry was going to be 4 gallons of fuel short, 4 gallons not 4 laps. Somehow Terry finds the 4 gallons he needs and does a victory lap and burn out. Did nascar help the Kellogg’s team with a bigger fuel cell, Unless your a box of rocks the answer would be yes. Kellogg’s never pulled out.

I'm glad to see you had all afternoon to do research. By OHV I meant a pushrod V8, I know they can't use a OHC engine. You were the one mentioning a bored and stroked 5.4 4 valve. You also asked how they are going to fit a 351 in a Mustang, probably the same way they do it in "Fusion".

I'm glade to see you had time to comment also, Although I have no idea just what that means.
I mentioned the 5.4 because a 5.4 would have to be Bored and stroked to become 358 cubic inch, it will never happen, it was in jest. Nascar will never let Ford run anything from this millennium. (and then they did) And yes they use a OHV engine, Ford started that with the 1954 239 cubic in OHV V8.(I had one)
research, I think not, I was watching nascar when they came on TV with Wide world of sports and Chris Economacie, Daytona 500 on ABC. I remember Dale Earnhardts pink 1956 Ford and I could go on and on but you think what you will. Richard Petty drove a Ford in NHRA Drag racing.

okay, so I am going to get flamed for saying it, but I agree with GM on this one.

The reason you wont see Camaro in Nascar is because GM has pulled out of NASCAR except for the Spring Cup series, Camaro is not approved for the cup series.Mustang is also not in the cup series.

I don't really. Ford is secure enough in their branding that they can throw the grill of a Mustang on a template car like a Nascar, and people will still see it as a Mustang.
