Need a quick tranny overview

Yes, I searched and found gobs of threads but none quite specific to the info that I'm looking for. What I need is a quick (if possible) overview of manual trannys that are compatible with a 5.0. A couple of my buddies are on the verge of buying an old Torino to fix up as a weekend rod. No racing anticipated just some cruising around looking and sounding good. They obviously only want to mess with the tranny one time. Could anyone give me a rundown on what's out there as far as easily available stock manuals and roughly what they would cost. Please feel free to rate them as well.
As a side note, I hate my T3650 with all its grinding and clunking but understand that it might be a viable option also.

SROD 4 speed (different bellhousing from T5)
T5 5 speed, multiple variations

Tremec 3550 (uses 4 speed SROD bellhhousing)

T5, Geforce T5, 3550, T56, TKO, TKO500 and TKO600 are the ones that come to mind. All depends on which bellhousing you have to mate it up. If its just a cruiser, a T5 will work and can be had for pretty cheap compared to the others. Just be sure its from a V8.

Well, the T-3650 will not bolt up to a 5.0 motor, so that is out of the question. Also a T-45 won't bolt up either. Those two are strictly 4.6L Trannys


I agree about the grinding T-3650. 2001-2004 was not a good year for that trans but they finally fixed it for 2005

i agree with the T-5 since this is a cruiser and not a race car i would just get a normal v8 production T-5 should hold up just fine and can be had for cheap.

That is correct. The 85-93 model T5 had a shorter input shaft than the 94 and later model T5's

having said that, it will work if you're willing to tear into the tranny a little bit and replace a couple parts

Please guys, if you don't know the answer to my question FOR SURE, please don't reply. I was getting worried. I have talked to 3 guys who said it will work on the 95 with the spacer. Direct swap.

I think they are thinking of a driveshaft spacer... steeda sells them but what the differences are the input shaft. http://www.moderndriveline.com/Technical_Bits/t5_history.htm

the tranny is moved farther back in respect to the engine, so why would a driveshaft spacer do anything?

it might be a spacer that goes between bellhousing and tranny, or between engine and bellhousing (but that setup might cause clutch fork problems?
