I recently traded my 89 fox 5 speed with some bolt ons and gears for a 94gt automatic... its pretty much bone stock.. just an CAI.. I really miss my car but I traded so the wifey can enjoy a stang without learning to shift. I wanna know what I can do to this thing to really pep it up to wear my old stang was.. im not looking for a screamer by any means but Im sure an automatic has different characteristics to it then a lighter stouter 5 speed fox.. my old fox was a mid 13 second car when I traded.. any way to get this heavy 94 aode into the low 14 second range without getting too crazy in price? Ive always done all work myself.. if any of you guys or gals can give me a few good power combos to shoot for, please share your wisdom. I would deeply appreciate getting back up to speed!! THANKS

BTW no smart comments saying why did you trade.. it hurts enough but whats done is done..

94 Stang

In my opinion you did ok. I like the style of the fox bodies a little more but they have a weak transmission with that borg warner toploader. I have owned about 4 of the fox bodies and have fixed quite a few of the transmissions. Always seemed to be the cheap pot metal they use on the shift forks.

Anyways if I were you and wanted to see bigger gains for not a whole bunch of scrill, I would start with a chip and a tuner. They aren't dirt cheap but they don't break the bank either.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the new ride!

Borg Warner Toploader???? The 89' Mustang has the same T-5 that the SN has. A Top Loader is old school, and a much better transmission than the T-5.

You can get the car into the 14s with some bolt ons. The biggest thing is the transmission. Do a transpak on the transmission, and probably some gears in the back.

Yes Borg Warner T5

Yes the 89 Mustangs had a Borg Warner T5 and toploader was just refering to the way the transmission is laid out not as in the actual old "toploader" transmissions.

I have rebuilt many of these.

Where would be a good chip/tuner to get from? American Muscle im guessing.. I know when i had my fox it was pretty uncommon to have a chip in one of them.. Figured the 94 was the same

Just thought it was odd that you used the term "toploader" as an opposition to the transmission in the SN, since they are both the same.

The SN computer is a little more peticular about things. Low end torque was augmented on the SN computer to preserve the transmission. The SN responds to a chip better than the old Fox body. American Muscle sells SCT chips, which are pretty good, and should fit your needs at a very reasonable price.

Thanks... that answers my question for sure about the computer... I will def put some funds together to get that with a tuner. I would like to see the potential of this car.

You can get into the mid-13's without getting crazy in price and weight reduction certainly helps. Check out my garage.

From alot of my friends having these cars. You would be very impressed with buying a adapter harness and using a a9p computer. But not 100% sure that will work with a auto. Oh and a GOOD converter will blow your mind with a set of gears also!

With advances in tuning the past few years there is no need to go through this trouble. The '94/5 EEC can work just as well (if not better) as the older a9's.

Like has been stated, gears and a shift kit. Could run up to 4.10s in the auto and it wouldnt be bad really. As for the T5, the 94 and 95 variant of it was different in terms of having a longer input shaft, reverse was synchronized with a brass blocking ring and it was rated for slightly more torque.

Personally, on an otherwise stock car, I don't think a chip is worth it...and, FWIW, you cannot buy a handheld tuner for it...it is still an OBD-I car, and they are not plug and play tunable like the OBD-II cars are...you need something like a twEECer, Moates QH, Anderson PMS, etc...and there is a considerable learning curve there if you are not up on computers...

If it were my car...

Since it is a 'vert, I would seriously look at some full-length weld-in subframe connectors.

Since it is an AODE, I would look at a shift kit...I like this one: TransGo Performance AODE-HD2 - TransGo Performance Shift Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com

and gears...3.73s or 4.10s, depending...

With 4.10s, you hit O/D before the 1/4 mile...not optimal in that regard...but, stop light to stop light...hard to beat...

Now, if you really want to make the transmission work for you, put the guts from a 4R70W in there...it's not an uncommon modification, and its not exactly cheap either, but you combine the wide-ratio gearset and a tranny computer with some 3.73 gears...that will be good...

Also, 93' and up T-5s have a different gear set, and use ATF.

Do not swap the computers its a waste of time and money. They 94/95's are not harder to tune they just seem to act up more with bolt on's sooner then the same ones done on the fox stangs. Any tuner that knows anything about tuning mustangs will have no issues at all tuning a 94/95 computer. Its a myth that has stuck to the internet for a very long time.

Do some gears and exhaust ( to make it sound better and for some added HP) with a few other things it wont be to hard to hit the goal you want

If you do this though, you still have to get a custom burnt chip which will end up costing another 300-500 easy with the tuning that will need to be done for the shift points of the gearset.

Your tranny sounds fine though, I would just stick the transgo HD-2 in it and add a cooler, that should do you good for a while rather than spending around a grand on tranny and tuning work. Do the simple stuff first, pulleys, K&N, yadda yadda. Do what you can afford and the ET will keep dropping. But definitely get gears soon, at least 3.55s as you're currently stuck with 2.73s

Definitely.

I have the same one and it's brilliant.

Definitely 3.73. With a 4.10 you'll hit O/D long before the 1/4 mile.

I have the 4R70W gearset and a 3.73 but not the tranny computer.

Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming. All the information is doing well. FYI its not a convertible. It already has a cold air intake. I did notice that this car shifts so soon its rediculous. Im hoping that shift kit will do the trick. Im getting money and a build plan ready for this car so as soon as the weather warms up a bit I can jump elbow deep into it. Im pretty much settled on this transgo shift kit. Im leaning more towards 3.73 gears. I dont wanna do too much and it will see the track probably 5 times at 5 passes each this summer so I want it to perform decent. So gears and shift kit is a definate now.
