Electrical Need help identifying this box

85 mustang gt won’t crank noticed some broken wires on the harness to this box but what is it? What’s it’s function? Passenger side next to the battery.

Voltage regulator? Newer model alternators have internal regulators
I'd be concerned with that gob of taped up wires too.

The voltage regulator works with the alternator to make sure that electrical output stays within 13.5-14.5 volts and that the battery stays charged.

Internal regulators came around in 86 or 87
That's why his 85 has a external regulator
ateyfivegeetee you should replace the alternator harness
Unhack the wires best you can
AZ et al. can test your regulator
