Need help On I6

You can do any of the things to an I6 that you do to a V8 to get more power. Headers, bigger carb, head work, bigger cam more compression and the list goes on. If you really want serious power it would be better to swap out to a V8. There's lots of info here that you can search for or ask specific questions.

I want power but I want to keep the orig. motor.The car has a hooker header on it already but only has a single barrell carb. Dont know what order i really need to start with the car. Should the engine be first, or the paint then interior then the engine?

stay away from clifford as they have a poor customer service record these days. mike over at www.fordsixparts.com has a new aluminum head coming fairly soon that will have a removable intake, and will definately increase hp and torque. some things you can do if you want to keep the stock head are;

1: find an offenhauser 3x1bbl carb settup, and work that on your head. the extra carbs will add power when you drop the hammer.

2: if you dont want the 3x1bbl settup, stovebolt.com has an adapter that will let you install a 5200 holley/weber carb from a pinto in place of the stock 1bbl carb, and that will also give you a power increase, as well as better fuel economy.

3: you can also install a carter yf carb from a 240/300 or mid 70's 250 granada onto your stock head. you will have to enlarge the carb opening a bit.

4: you can go to a better aftermarket cam. fordsix parts has a few to choose from, as does comp cams and crane cams as well. keep it mild as the log head doesnt care about valve lift over .425" or so.

5: you can have larger valves installed in the head, 1.75in/1.50ex is as big as you want to go.

6: mill the head .050 for more compression.

7: set your ignition timing by advancing the timing untill you get detonation, then back off untill it goes away.

8: if you have the load-o-matic dist, toss it in the trash and get a dual advance dist from a 68 and later 200. if you get a points dist. use a pertronix ignitor. you can also use a duraspark dist from a mid 70's and later 200 or 250.

That would depend entirely up to what you think is the most important. I think anything to do with safety should be first. Good brakes, steering and suspension are the most important items. Drive train reliability would be second. If it were me I would repaint the car and redo the interior if the engine is reliable but that is just me. Another thing you might think about is will the stock drive train hold up under heavy engine mods. Some guys that have built I6's might be able to give you more insight on that.
