Hey guys, this morning i was driving and suddenly got the low tire pressure warning. I've only had it since late august, and have only driven it once or twice since november because of the wintery weather. Only got about 1500 miles on it so far. I had to take it today because my "winter" car was being used by my bro. I've heard that tire pressure can decrease with a drop in temp. Its only about 10 degrees here so could that be the cause? Or should I be concerned? I didnt have a gauge with me so i havent measured yet. Thanks

Your warning goes off when the pressure dips below 26psi I believe. Your tires should be at about 32 warm. So even if it is that cold, it shouldn't be dipping below 26. Stop at an autoparts store and buy yourself a $3 gauge and keep it in your glovebox. Everyone should have one and use it on a regular basis.

does this mean that i have to necessarily fill the tires up, or will they be back to normal when the temp goes up a lil bit?

they wont vary with temp so much that it will set off lights, then correct itself. check the pressure regularly. by the time these tires look low, they usually have about 15 pounds of pressure in them. check them every week for optimal tire life, gas mileage, and safety.

right now, you really need to go check the pressure and see where you are.

All auto makers rate the correct PSI in tires at COLD pressure, never hot or warm.. I get people all the time when the temp drops and they have TPMS.. the light comes on. They don't keep up with their tire pressure and it's right on the edge of tripping the light. It gets cold, and trips the light.

I've found that just about all tires can loose about 1psi per month so if you haven't checked the pressure in several months the issue is probably that you're a little low on pressure. I check the tire pressure in all of my vehicles every month.

Tires can lose up to 10psi a month (depending on weather) so it's always a good idea to check your pressure atleast once a month.

SECTION 204-04: Wheels and Tires 2007 Mustang Workshop Manual
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Procedure revision date: 11/02/2007

As the ambient temperature decreases by 6°C (10°F), tire pressure decreases 7 kPa (1 psi). Adjust the tire pressure by 7 kPa (1 psi) for each 6°C (10°F) ambient temperature drop as necessary to keep the tire at the specified vehicle certification label pressure.

as mentioned above check your tire pressures.
