My 98 Cobra has been sitting for 7-8 months. When I went to start it, it fired up and then died. She will still turn over, but won't start. Where do I start looking for the problem?

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe the IAC is stuck.

Was going to check the IAC valve, but book said to put positive from meter on VPWR, what and where is that? Have spark, but no pressure at the fuel line schrader valve. Going to change fuel filter next. How can I check fuel pressure reg? Best way to check fuel pump with out dropping tank, can it be checked with ohmn meter?

Thanks for all the help, it ain't as easy now like it was on the 69 Mach 1.

Since it turns over but doesn't start, one of 2 things is missing. The spark or the fuel. Since the spark is present, then the fuel is an issue. I'm not sure how to check it though.

Worse case you may need it towed to a mechanic who can look at the fuel pressure. Make sure your TB is not stuck.

Check the inertia switch for the fuel pump cutoff (in the trunk). Maybe it's tripped for some reason, preventing the fuel pump from running.

The inertia switch was one of the first things I checked and TB is working as well.

Fuel filter was clogged. While I have car jacked up, is it wise/possible to check fuel pump by running hose from outlet of filter to gas can and quickly turning on ign to see if pump is working?

Fuel pump pumping or not?

That is not a good idea. One spark and you can say goodby! You have no where to run. If you want to know if your pump is turning on, have someone turn your ignition switch to the on position while you put your ear up to the fuel tank filler cap area. If you remove your gas cap you will hear it better. If your pump is working properly, you will hear it humming. If you don't hear it, it is either not getting powered up or is defective. I would then check for voltage coming off from the inertia switch with a voltage tester. If you have voltage coming off the inertia switch, and you don't hear your pump working, then the problem is between the inertia switch and the pump. If you have voltage and you hear the pump pumping, and the engine does not start, then you need to install a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel rail to see how much pressure the pump is putting out. It could also be a defective crankshaft sensor as well. Hope this helps. Good luck, Tommy.

Well tried it before I received your response Tommy, no fuel, and yes I'm still alive to tell about it. Have power going to pump, but only 7 volts, that didn't make sense, shouldn't it be 12. Ran wires from battery to check pump with full 12 volts, no humming. Suggestions for getting all the fuel out of the tank so I can change pump? I was reading some of the other theads about pumps, best to go thru Ford to get the new one?

The 1st thing is disconnect the negative side of the battery. That is the most important part for the fuel pump removal. We had approximately 5 gals of gas in the tank. What we did was, after we disconnected what ever is required to be disconnected for the tank removal, we tilted the tank on an angle. We had the floor jack under the tank with a block of wood between the jack and tank and took a slight strain on the jack. We removed both straps and lowered the driver side of the tank down till we felt there was enough room above the tank to remove the fuel pump module. Actually the tank removal instructions tell you to remove the tank completely from the car. We did not want to do that because you will have to purchase a rubber grummet from the dealer for the gas filler tube side that enters the gas tank. To separate the gas tank from the filler tube, the grummet has to be destroyed. We took a chance by just lowering the driver side of the tank and kept looking at the filler tube to see how much pressure was on the rubber grummet. The gas tank removal instructions is listed below. We then unbolted the fuel pump module and removed it. I don't know how much gas you have in your tank, be prepared to get gas all over the place once you unbolt the fuel pump module. With 5 gals of gas in the tank, approximately half a gallon spilled out once the fuel pump module bolts were removed. We cleaned it up right away and used the water hose to shoot the remaining gas away from the area. This is not the proper way of getting the remaining gas out from your tank. However, we had no other way to do it. We tried using a hose in the gas filler tube with negative results. The hose kept stopping when it got the the fuel tank area. Anyway, after the fuel pump module was removed, we then siphoned out the remaining gas through the openning where the fuel pump module is installed. Be sure to take note of the position of the fuel pump module cover, it has to go back the same way. I purchased a Bosch brand fuel pump module from Car Quest. It is suppost to be a quality product. I can tell you that no matter what you read, this is not an easy job. If interested I can go into a more detailed process of what we went through to replace the fuel pump module. I'm leaving to do some business right now. I can fill you in when I return. Let me know, Tommy.

make sure you have a good ground for your meter. then. if you still only have 7 volts, since the car sat... you might possibly have a corroded connector in your harness somewhere. or maybe the fuel pump relay is corroded/bad.
