I want a new AOD transmission for my 1988 GT hatchback mustang. Any comments on a Performance Automatic Superstreeter AOD lockup transmission. I saw one advertised on Summit model PA53101 for $1,293.95. I also saw a Hughes 3000 RPM stall torque lockup converter for $396.95 dollars. Would this combination be a wise purchase for a street mustang which might see some track use on a bi-monthly basis?

The PA trannys are supposed ot be good units. You might also check out www.lentech.com they have a Street Cruiser Tranny now that is a little more beefed up than a stock rebuild for around $1,300.00 and they have a great reputation.

Is this lentech tranny an equivalent to the PA tranny?

Anybody have any experiences, either good or bad, with the PA racing performance automatic transmissions?

lentech builds the best aods but you pay for it. go with www.edgeracingconverters.com for a converter. just remember when it comes to performance you get what you pay for.
you need:
good valvebody/shift kit
mech. diode drum
2" o/d band
a or a+ servo
red eagle clutches and koleane steels
and hardened pencil shaft.
im sure im forgeting something

get the lentech trans. with a manual valve body... very strong.
id also get the edgeracing converter. its the same price as the one you listed but the edge converters are custom made for your car. you call them up, tell them what you have done to the car, your hp level, driving style, future plans and they make the converter to match your car.
you get what you pay for
remember this.. if you dont have the money to do it right the first time, how will you ever have the money to do it right the second time

I want a transmission that will shift better than stock and give the car a great launch. What I do not understand is the difference between lockup and non-lockup transmissions and converters?

mostly street driven stay lock-up it will keep tranny temp down and help gas milage. nonlock lets the converter slip in drive and o/d. witch helps at track but not good on the street"wear and tear". and after market valvebody is better than a shift kit.

I am now leaning towards buying a TCI Streetfighter AOD model 431000 from Jegs along with a Streetfighter torque converter with 3000 Stall. Will I need a torque converter with anti-balloning plate or one without anti-ballooning plate? Anybody have any comments about the TCI Steetfigher transmissions and torque converters?

Ive heard good and bad things about TCI..There was just an article on a PA AOD install with a 11 or 12 second 5.0 Always heard good things about PA! Now Lentech is the mac daddy of AOD tranny's But your gonna pay a little more. When it comes to converters you get what you pay for. I have a 2800 Precision Industries converter and consider it to be the best converter for a 5.0..But there pricey,Edge makes a really good conv. also and there a little cheaper.I would only use one of these 2 converters for a 5.0,yes,a lock up!

Here is my comment.

You are paying way too much for what you need if you buy an aftermarket built AOD.

The factroy clutches will hold 400 hp---do you have 400 HP?

Throw a shift kit in (www.becontrols), and a boost valve.

Add a nice 3000 converter...lockup for street use, nonlock for drag racing.

Add a cooler

Go with 3.73/4.10 gears and you will be happy as a lark =- prommise....I build AOD's profesionlay for the KCMO market.

Lentech/PA are very nice units....ArtCarr is also. They are all riding the "AOD sucks" train to the bank. Keep your money and spend it wisely....that is my comment. If you need/want more info hit my many threads on Corral or FordVsChevy.

What is a reasonable cost for labor for an overhaul of the transmission?

Kits are kits are kits....no matter who sells them.

I charge $300 for OEM and $400 for Perforamance
even though there isn't much differnence, I just pay more attention to stuff when it is going to be raced.

You might invest in manuals and a video and do it yourself....MANY people have great success with home built AOD, they are easy as cake, and I can't cook
