Hey thanks for the info. I will proably buy a timing light this weekend and then take it up to him maybe the following weekend. I know what the timing should be, I am just hearing a lot of different ideas on what should be done first. Any ideas?... Bone stock 1990 5.0 5 speed with exhaust work done. I dont like it though. What do you figure to start with? I was thinking about the intake, MAF, TB, lifters and roller rocker arms by this summer along with a better exhaust. Keep the 19lb injectors also.

depends what the end result is that you are shooting for. That is a good starting point, also look into a set of underdrive pulleys they are worth a 10th in the qarter mile. as far as the timing goes start at 11 to 13 degrees. if you here it ping a little drop 1 degree until it goes away.

Well that could be difficult because of one of the rocker arms or lifters being bad, but a great tip to start. I thought the stock timing was 10 deg? I want to eventually make a really agressive street car that I can take to the track every so often. Thanks so much for the info.

If you're coming down to the dyno, I could bring my light and take care of it for you there in the lot.

the stock timing is actually 9 degrees but that is very conservative. I have mine set at 15 degrees but I also have aluminum heads. If you are looking at some new rockers the crane cobra rockers are a good deal plus since they are 1.7 it gives you a little more lift as well. I have run those before and have had good luck.

Those are actually the ones that I was checking into. Well at least I think I was. Great idea. Thanks.

Ahh i remember modding my 5.0 86 GT Vert. Junk the factory intake (not the cai). I was running 14 degrees with the mods i had and it loved it. +1 on the 1.7 rockers, will give you a lil more lift wihtout having to swap cams. Do you full exhaust? Headers, h pipe, catback ? If you still have stock headers pull em and leave em for dead somewhere. Craigslist is your friend

My 86 Auto put down 215 rwhp with these mods:Trick Flow upper/lower, 89 GT TB/Spacer,1 5/8 Shorty headers, O/R H pipe, Dumped flowmasters, 1.7 rockers, adj. fuel regulator, msd 6a w/ blaster coil, CAI, 14 degree timing, Underdrive pulleys. Now given the fact that in 86 flywheel HP was an groud pounding 200HP and the car had 180K on it, you've got way more potential with the 90 MAF setup and e7te heads.

Hey Mike, I remember that car! I had the saleen at the time, those were the days... Although, with just 14 degrees 202rwhp and 284rwtq (Bone stock down to the paper filter and air silencer). At first it made about 196rwhp, but the guy at carb connection was nice enough to bump my timing on the dyno there and we were surprised by the initial free gain in power! Man are these 5.0's torque monsters!

I totally agree about the torque monster deal. The last one I was working on with a friend back home dyno'd at 342 at the wheels with a 150 shot and
420+ on torque. We actually found a 1 inch crack on the left side motor mount after words. Fun stuff.

If you didn't get this taken care of, just let me know.

I also have an extra set of underdrives in the garage we can throw on....

Will, his balancer is completely rusted over. I couldn't see a single mark on it.

good luck! my balancer is for sale! anyways, I think that you shouldn't play with timing until you get your valve tick under control.

Good call. I had to finally swap the thermostat today and now I'm just waiting on the cash to start replacing the parts that i need. I should hopefully be doing the work in a few months or less.

By the way, thanks Dave for looking at it for me. I'm sure you heard the tick I have been talking about. I have been looking at some of the lifter and roller rocker arm setups on Summit and the price seems to be reasonable. Do you maybe have some place that is cheaper on parts?

If your balancer is rusted, we can find TDC pretty easy and make some marks....

Feel free to drop in one night and I'll put my eyes/ear on the car and see if we can sort out what is going on....
