need some help with points!

Just changed my points,cap, wires and plugs, and the spark plug have no spark! So I checked the points and they aren't moving when I turn over the car? Heard that I need to change the Condenser? What Am I doing wrong? How do I make it work? Not sure what to do next!

If your points aren't moving you need to set the gap correctly. I'm not sure what it needs to be for your car but I'd say .015- .018" gap should get it started. A dwell gauge is the best way to set points after it's up and running.

Points and condensor should always be treated as a unit and replaced together and they are cheap enough to do so, that's the first thing. Second, if you do not have a proper gauge and know the gap then setting the points is next to impossible, especially if you are running the old school upgrade and have dual points. Now, a match book cover is about the right thickness and can be used in a pinch to get them close enough to start the car but they should be properly gapped. If they aren't enough the car won't turn, if they are too much you will get backfires.

Honestly your best bet is to switch over to a Pertronix system. Installation is a no brainer and it takes even less time then you'll spend gapping the points properly. I have never been happier since I did it and I enjoyed tuning the car the way it was. If you have the money I would suggest you do so and keep those new points and condensor in an emergency trunk kit with a flat head screwdriver like I do just in case years from now the pertronix does go bad and you are stranded. Old school is still the best way to get you back up and running in a pinch but new school is the better way to go fro day to day reliability.

Single diaghram on the distributor, .018 gap. Dual diaphram, .021 gap.

I converted both 'Stangs to the Unilite under-cap system.

Wow, someone still has points!

If it make you feel any better I just got the car about 3 week ago! So I've just began to touch is monster!

So did I up until last year Dan, I never replace a working part just for the sake of it. Maybe I should be called the cheap one.

Sounds like you didnt set them up right, the part that contacts the distributor lobe at its highest point has to make contact as they open and thats where you set the gap. Hard to explain but gonna try. The thing the rotor sits on is the lobe, it is shaped like a hexagon. When you set the points the little plastic tab must hit this and open up to the gap you set.
To get the points where they will matchup to the lobe you have to ethier bump the motor,( or with engine and key off) turn it at the crank with a ratchet or turn the fan belt by hand (I usually do it this way). If you cant understand this and noone can explain it better I will email you a drawing.

Weee! She is up and workin!! I think she is purring like a kitten! Hopeing to take her out some time this week (prayin not to get stuck) Changed the oil for the first time and found 3 large? (size of a eraser top) pieces in it. Geeez! Just want to get her out on the road once before any big over haulin'. Anyway thanks every one for your tips, they were a big help. I'm sure you'll hear from me soon on the next project I'll be trying.

I'm still running dual points in my 428... I added an MSD about 15 years ago & never need to look at them. What ain't broke...

pak, yes it was the gapping and also the belts and the timeing! They all needed to be ajusted! A. van, as for what not sure I found them in the oil filter and they hard was a rock possibly metal but not for sure!
