Need to choose an intake mainfold

The 289 block is finally getting cleaned, and I just ordered a wicked set of Keith Black hypereutectic pistons. Even with 126k miles, the crank is in excellent condition and just needs a little bit of cleaning. I'm pretty damn excited about all this.

So with all the excitement, I'm making more decisions on how to build this motor. I am set on some AFR165's, looking into a CompCams 282s, and now it's time to look for an intake. I've checked out specs for the Performer RPM, Weiand Stealth, and X-Celerator intakes.

I need to know which intake would be good for a well mannered summer weekend driver, with an occasional trip to the strip so I can prove that Mustangs are still king of the road.

Here's some more options: Edelbrock's older F4B, Ford's 60's era C9OX, The Shelby/Cobra high rise dual plane, and Ford's current A321. All these are basically the same intake. All high rise dual plane but have a different runner layout than the Performer RPM and Weiand Stealth. But all work basically the same, there's not 5 hp difference between them all. All work from idle to 6500 rpms, no matter what their operating range is listed as. Take your pick. I've run the RPM and Ford A321 and I can't tell the difference. I prefer the Ford intake though and enjoy telling the brand "X" owners that it's a stock intake.:D

Been awhile since I saw that test. It's been a long while since it was done. I think they'd have been better leaving the HO roller cam in the motor. There wasn't ten hp difference between all the top performers in it. And notice how the Performer's power suddenly ran out of breath at 4500 rpms.

:)

Yeah it is an old test...

You would think that someone would do a new test!!!

I still believe the C90x/cobra would fair very well...

Unless you are wanting an extreme car this intake(c90x/cobra) which is period correct is a great intake.

I cannot stress enough that it is putting together a good combo that will make the difference...

Also remeber just throughing a bigger carb on does not help...

I saw a test somewhere that a properly tuned and jetted holley 500cfm outperformed many others including a 650 &750 holley and edelbrock on a stock/mild rebulit small block...

It is the entire combo!!!

I've got the A321 on the warmed up roller 5.0 in my Ranger now. Same intake as your C9OX. Works great with the roller motor and the F4TE roller cam. Carb is really too big (750 cfm Holley) but that's another story. Worked better with the 600 I had on it before. About 90% of the time I can jump in it, and bump the starter and it'll fire up and idle like it had EFI. If you didn't pop the hood, you'd never guess it wasn't.

use the rpm airgap intake with that cam.

According to summitracing, the Air-Gap's RPM range is 1500-6500
The Weiand Stealth's RPM range is idle-6800.

What benefit would the Air-Gap have over the Stealth that might trump the extra 1800rpm's that the Stealth claims to give access to?

The rpm range on dual plane intakes is misleading. They give up nothing on the bottom over a smaller runner/plenum intake. Single planes are different and some do give you a soggy bottom, depending on the carb and cam chioce. Put your two choices on a dyno-mule and I'll bet there's not 10 hp difference between them. They'll both work well on any 289/302 no matter what parts you have in the motor.
