New 3.73's...

Hey i decided to finally go for some new gears, since the 2.73's or whatever we have stock are POS. What gears do most people use? I saw motive gears which i heard we good on summit for 180. Do those include the the shims, pinion nut etc. If they don't what exactly would i need. Like traction lock, or a kit whatever.

Mustang tuning has this kit for the motive gears

would that be it then, the 3.73's for 180 and the kit for 90. Keep in mind my car has 110k miles on it.

Ford racing gears are what you want. Might wanna look into a bearing rebuild kit and a trac lock rebuild kit too.

The old cliche for our type of mustangs (non modular) is 3.73's for stick and 4.10's for auto. Ford uses 2.73's to satisfy all the old grocery getters who want a low crusing rpm in the same manner that they tune the car from factory to use 87 octane.

I have a stick and use 3.55's I am very satisfied with them. I have also had 3.73's and 4.10's on other stick cars. I went with 3.55's because I knew eventually with this car I would be adding a 347 and later a vortech. The additional tq from the 347 will make up for the lower tq multiplication of the 3.55's vs 3.73's with a 302 motor. IMO only.

if u have a manual tranny, id say go with 3.73's. my old vert was a stick with 3.73's and it was kick-ass. if u have an auto, 3.73's are good, but ive heard that 4.10's are the way to go if u have an auto. my auto coupe with 3.73's does fine for me, but id like to see what 4.10's are like

Go to www.gefracing.com and get some FMS 3.73's. Should run you about 160 shipped. FMS are easy to install and SOOO worth it. Forget motive.

what's the change in gas mileage when going from the stock gears to 3.73's? i'm poor and can't afford to spend more on gas.

Most people say they lose 1 or 2 on the freeway and gain 1 or 2 in the city. However, you shouldn't have purchased a sports car that you wanted to upgrade if you were worried about gas

Umm no one anticipated paying between $3-5 dollars a gallon either depending on location so keep that in mind.

that's right!

a lot of you guys say the same ol' shiet when it comes to gas mileage--"it's a sportscar, bla bla bla, i'm an idiot and don't take gas prices into consideration." but, wytstang is exactly right. who the hell thought we'd be paying triple for gas?

this is the first time i get to use that emoticon, so here it goes again...

If your mileage went to 10mpg, it would still be worth it every time you press the gas pedal.....

I didn't notice any difference. Still got 18mpg in the city.

If the state of tune is good you dont really loose jack...Hell, Im around 18-21 with no highway driving and 373's...and i had 355's and swapped these in...

I would def go FRPP for the gears, most are gonna say that...they work....axle seals and a pinion seal should be swapped out as those are cheap...If the rears quiet, I'd leave the bearing's right alone, as long as everything looks good with the bearing's/races at disassy...the dif's are pretty rugged....you dont really see alot of post on junked out dif's, hence my thinking....I left everything alone in 3 swaps without a peep out of it...
