Well i just got a 1996 SVT Cobra, im having some problems, to my surprise and happiness i have found out my car has MOD's already!!! I purchased it from a dealer in Atlanta, GA (two days ago) and from the car fax report it shows one owner, now i know it has an X-pipe, kn filter charger and underdrive pullies but my problem is gears, i can tell its geared i think do to me running right above 3k rpms at 80 miles an hour on the highway, im thinking 3.73 but my frined thinks 4.10 any help and by the way glad to be BLUE again!!!!

Sounds like 4:30s to me!

You can use a calculator to get there:

gear/speed calculator

I would get under the car and actually count the revolutions myself, so that there could be no error.

That doesn't seem to be a popular way of doing it according to the kids on this forum though.

YOUR car, your choice.

Geezerdom...I've finally arrived.

This is a much better gear calculator. It account's for the transmission gearing in whatever year stang you have. Very good. According to this in 5th gear at 80mph you should be turning 3016 rpms with 245/45-17's and 4.30's.

EDIT: I forgot to say with 4.30's you'll turn 3016 at 80mph in 5th with 245/45-17's

Many Cobra owners highly recommend 4.30's. Congrads!

I agree with everyone else .4.30's..

My 3:73's are 2500~2600 at 80mph..
