Ok, I need some help. I have a H/C/I/blower on a stock shortblock. I bought a tko setup that came with the tranny, scattershield, clutch, shifter, etc. I bought a new flywheel...

..and everything should have been good. I tried to start my new setup, and it just grinded. The starter was about the only factory piece under the hood, so I replaced it. I got the new one in, and still it just grinds. I removed it, and can see some little shavings on the fhywheels teeth. Any ideas?

Well we can kinda rule out the flywheel. It is a 157 tooth piece as needed. I even counted them. Start at the bottom with zero, and I made red marks every 5. The last mark is 155, with 2 more teeth before the beginning.

...and yes, I shrunk the picture. The origional size was like 3400 x 2200 and 3mb.

What kind of scattershield do you have?
Did it require you to reuse the spacer? use stock starter?

Can you see if starter gear is stripping on end or middle? Has it turned the motor at all? If not check ring gear on flywheel where it made contact.

I bought it used along with the TKO, clutch, all from the same guy. It didn't come with a spacer.

I dont no much about the aftermarket stuff like the scattershield but one of my friends forgot to put the thin metal plate between his trans and motor (stock bellhousing etc) and his starter never worked the way it should cuz the starter was in too far to the flywheel side cuz of the lack of the spacer......when i put my new motor in the first time I went to crank it the starter grinded, I turned the motor over a little with a ratchet on the balancer bolt and started fine after that...just a thought

Does the starter bolts thread directly into the scattershield at the top and than at the botton into the spacer?

Cant really tell the dimensions of the scattershield alone without the spacer in the first of second pair of pics. But it almost appears that the spacer is thicker than the factory thin metal spacer....right? Maybe this is what is causing the starter gear to not slide fully into the flywheel ring gear and catch good.

Really need to find out where exactly the starter gear is contacting the ring gear on flywheel (grinding on). Suggestion might be pull of starter and coat ring gear area where starter might come in contact with some type of substance like a grease to show where its hitting. Suggestions anyone?
