New Fuel Pump Install Question

Installed a brand new Walboro 190lph pump today. The install went smooth and now I have a question.

I drained all of the fuel out of the tank, replaced the pump and reinstalled the tank.

I have not yet put gas in the tank, when I turn the key on the ignition, I dont hear noise at all. Should I hear the pump priming or does fuel need to be in the car to hear that whine sound? All electical connections were hooked back up, lines hooked back up. New filter.

Reason I ask is that I dont want to go put gas in the car just to find out there is a problem, the have to drain it out again.

So, should I hear the pump make noise on a completely empty tank or will I only hear it when the when there is fuel added?

Dry priming will kill your new pump. They are design for the fuel pump through the assembly. When it runs out of fuel and is kept running, it will over heat and cause the armature to go bad. Besides, how can you hear the pump prime the fuel without any fuel.

Never mind, figured it out. When I installed the pump, I disconnected the inertia switch and cranked the engine to relieve fuel pressure.

When I was done, I reconnected the battery and everything but did not connect the inertia switch. When I remembered, I connected it and the pump would not prime. On a chance, I disconnected the neg term of the batt again and reconnected it with the inertia switch hooked up this time and what do ya know, the pump is priming.

So, apparently if you disconnect the inertia switch, it must be hooked back up BEFORE the battery in order for it to work.

The inertia switch shouldnt matter - it's either open or closed and has no clue what the battery is doing.

Glad to hear you got it whipped. Fidstang is right about the fuel lubricating and cooling the pump - be careful with the dry running (priming indicates the movement of fluid, so it wasnt even priming but rather attempting to run. ).

Next time you may want to test fire the pump while the tank is still no the ground...when it's in place is a hell of a time to find out you missed something. I actually spent the morning installing my 255 lb walbro to replace my misbehaving 190...I can't pinpoint the problem but the pump came out without the sock attached and the red lead disconnected! Congrats on the new pump.

Hmmm, dont know what the issue was then. That was the only thing I did between 5p when it wasnt making any noise and just a little while ago when I disconnect the neg of the batt and reconnected it. Oh well, its working now and thats what matters.
