new gear

i have a 97 mustang gt with a 4.6L 2v and i am looking to put a 4.10 gear in it. i would like some suggestions on parts. what to change or upgrade. the engine has 157,000 miles on it and the rear end has not been touched other then routine maintenance. so just wanted some input on the upgrade.

For 4.10s I'd go with FRPP:

FRPP 4.10 gear set by Ford Racing

And with that sort of mileage I would recommend a full-rebuild of the rear when doing the gears. For example, consider FRPP's "Stage 3" ring & pinion installation kit that gives all new bearings, races, shims, seals, etc:

While you're in there you might as well do the limited slip clutches as well:

Have you got experience rebuilding rear ends? It's not a job to be taken lightly, it requires a lot of careful measurement and adherance to instructions. You can cut the cost significantly by doing it yourself, but I don't want you thinking it's as simple as taking out the old and tossing in the new and being done after a couple hours. I had a shop do my gears, full rebuild, new seals, ford racing gears and rebuilt the carrier with new LSD clutches. Cost me a premium at $900, but it was done in a day and it came out perfectly, the shop knew their stuff. Also take into account that you'll either have to get a piggyback speedo recalibration tool(~$150) or a tuner(SCT/Predator etc. ~$300) to reprogram your computer for the new gears.

Aside from that, all the parts trinity suggested are top notch.

Excellent point. I believe that for the 97 he'll need the output shaft gear changed or a Speedcal (or equivalent.) I don't think the PCM can be reprogrammed.

Correct me if I'm wrong

Yeah I am unsure on that, his car could very well be prior to PCM gear programmability. My predator is only good for 98-04's so that might say something.

I wasn't very clear when I said:

"I don't think the PCM can be reprogrammed."

I should have said:

"I don't think the speedometer can be corrected via programming the PCM."

yeah it can't. have an issue with the speedo already with bigger tires in the rear. speedo is off by 10 right now. well thanks for the info guys just trying to get info on this never did a rear end before. just wanted to see what i am getting myself into

Yikes how big are your tires? I would have done it myself, if I had a garage and this wasn't my DD. It's just a good sized project for somebody with good tools and some time to get it done and the patience to do it right... one bad measurement means a noisy and potentially short lived gear set.

275 40r 17 on the rear. when i bought the car the previous owner did stuff to it but i do not know the specifics. i do know it was in a accident once. so as i do little things to the car i find out a little bit more about the car. i have not done the rear end yet just trying to get info on the best way to do it
