New goodies! Need a gear install how-to

This will be my project for next weekend.

03 Cobra 31 spline diff
Superior axles
Summit diff cover
and Summit install kit.

I'm keeping the 3.73's, so all I really need to know is what measurements I need to check and how to do it. The rest I can figure out on my own I think.

Also, what gear oil would you guys recommend?

ish gears i would have done at a shop, there nda tricky to set up, when i did mine i spent more on the tools to measure the pinion depth and such than it would have cost to hace chicane sport tuning do it.

Mike, maybe check out the link in Mo Dingo's sig. He did a nice write-up with lots of specs and crap (IIRC) when he and his friend did his gears.

I'm not changing gears, just the diff. I already have all the tools I need.

You are thinking exactly what I'm thinking. Launches on the street with my drag tires put a nice little moan in my passenger side axle a while back. I need to fix this.

If you don't mind, where did you purchase from and how much?

I'll be watching your thread to see how it went. I've got 4.10s and would like to keep them in but upgrade the diff and axles to something a bit more stout.

Your only going to upgrade one axle????

Yep everything came from Summit. It was a little over 700 for everything I think. I tried to get the diff and axles from buyfordracing.com but they were on backorder.

I just put an Eaton carrier, and Superior 31 spline axles in this week. I had problems with the end of the axle being too long. I got everything together, and I couldn't get the pin through the carrier. It was hitting on the very end of the axles.
I measured the little end of the axles just after the c-clip, and on the stock one it was .250". On the Superior axles that same spot was .318". I just had a friend of mine mill the end down to .250" and it was good to go.
I'll be interested to see how your install goes for you. I just wonder if I got a hold of the wrong axles or something

So far the install went pretty smooth. I only ran into two problems...First, I completely forgot about the ABS rings on the axle. Both my sensors are destroyed, so I'm not going to worry about it right now. Second, I put all the old shims back in with the new carrier and it was too tight. It took at least 30 minutes to get the carrier back out. Took out one shim and it fit pretty good with backlash at .009, so I bolted everything down.

I still need to put fluid in the rear and put the brakes back on. I'll post up my results from today later tonight.

I ran into a slight problem putting the brakes on, the caliper mounting bracket hit the rotor. A couple washers took care of that problem tho. I wonder if Summit sent me 99+ axles.....I put in 2 quarts of gear oil, but I think it's still a little low so I need to pick up another quart to top it off.

The rear is definitely solid now. I punched the gas and instantly went sideways. It seems a little quieter too, as in I didn't notice it clunking as bad. I didn't hear any gear whine, but I'm not sure that I could hear it over the exhaust if there was any.

Glad everything went well with the install. The abs sensors were one of the things I was worried about; especially since so many people broke theirs. But some PB blaster and they came out like butter.

I guess I need to add the gear writeup into my sig again. I forget how many people still use it!!!

Nice to hear the install went good. As far as the 99-up axles.....they're 3/4" longer than 94-98s so I doubt that's it. But I've heard about a lot of people with Superiors having to add some washers for the same problem you listed on both 94-98s and 99-04s. I've used and installed Superiors in both though and didn't have to mess with washers on either. Maybe I just got lucky. About the fluid level, my Ford manual says capacity is 3.75 pints. I've never payed attention to how much went into mine though, I've always used the aluminum covers like you have and filled it to the bottom of the filler hole. I believe the aluminum covers like you have increase the capacity though.

Yeah, they're definitely not 3/4" too long.

I don't know what the fluid level is at, but it's not up to the bottom of the fill hole. It's probably close enough where I shouldn't worry about it, but I'm not going to take the chance. A bottle of gear oil isn't nearly as expensive as the parts I just installed.
