since i got bitch slapped with the lazy card here we go

I'm looking for some new cyl heads for my 289. heres a little engine mock up.

Stock Internals
Edlebrock Performer RPM Airgap Intake Manifold
Holley 670 CFM Street Avenger
and some Tri-Y headers.

I'm eventually going to replace this motor with a 347 stroker sometime next summer, but now i want to get my 289 a little more umph. i've looked at the AFR165's and decided that 1300 dollars was a little much for me..since that is about the ammount for a 302 shortblock. and i've looked into the Performer RPM Heads, but wonder if they are anything more than a stock replacment.

so i ask..if anyone has a 289 that isn't super modded something more stock like mine, has some heads somewhere in the price range between the PerformerRPM's and the AFR's ( hopefully less than 900 ) that will bolt right up without having to change much..

and on a second note, i've worked on everything in my car except for the engine work, i've done engine work in highschool in autoshop, but i can't say that i've had a lot of hands on time for quite a few years hehe. so i don't remeber what i have to do when i switch cyl heads and i don't really think my wallet will allow me to upgrade my entire valve train like i origionally hoped, so a little help would be very great, on what it is i have to do, not a step by step guide mind you, but an overview of say "you have to change this this and this, and replace that because it's worn" or something. i've got a few engine building books at home that i've been putting on hold for school.

i've surfed this message board for a while and i know theres tons of great people and people with much knowledge which is why i ask here! thank you for your help.

is the Tremec 3550 got a similar crossmember as a t5 swap would have? becase that is my next project, and the one thing i am concerned about is my header clearence..how much did you have to modify the tranny tunnel to put that tremec in btw?

I recently got my '66 with 302 up and running with some Twisted Wedge heads and a comp. cam. I would definitely recommend doing them together. Otherwise you will get it back together and wish you had done it in the first place. Not to mention the high flow aluminum heads on the market really respond to a larger than stock cam very well.
I got a pair of used fully assembled TFS Twisted Wedge heads, pushrods (wrong length though), and 1.6 rocker arms from ebay for $800. Deals can be found there sometimes.
I will probably do a stroker in the future and these heads will work fine there too.

i'm weary of ebay
and i'm unsure about an entire valve train upgrade since i don't know if i will have the place to do it, i'm going to go see my old auto teacher today and see if we can strike a deal where i can use his shop and i come in and help with the kids or something.

From what I understand Tremecs & T5's use the same crossmember for the swap- I got a tubular one from Dark Horse Performance. I also, got a shortened input shaft from them to replace the stock Tremec shaft so I could use my original 65 bell housing and linkage without any kind of spacer/adaptor plates. I have full length headers and it is not an issue at all. I originally did not have to modify the tranny tunnel at all, however when I got my Pro 5.0 shifter I had to enlarge the shifter hole slightly, but the stock shifter fit fine.

i'm going to be moving from an automatic, so the clutch assembly will be an interesting venture as i'm going to most likely go for the cable clutch kit from moderndrivelies i just wish clutch pedals werent so expensive *grumbles* have you noticed how every kit says how easy it is to install but leaves out certain things like exactly what parts you need? :\
