New here, question about switching to electronic ignition

So I decided to muddle around today and put in a Ignitor II system. Everything seemed to install fine but then the engine would not catch. The starter would go, sounded strong, but the engine would not fire and go. I double checked and everything was wired right, rotor was in, new coil and all. So I decided, ugh, and switched back to the original setup of points. Now, same thing...no catch. Any ideas?? Thanks all!!

If all you did was swap the distributor then It must be timed wrong, off only one tooth will do it and its easy to mess up.
Pull #1 plug and put your finger in the hole the tap it over with your screw driver on the solenoid, when you feel compression pushing out your finger it on the compression stroke. then turn the engine till the timming mark is on TDC and install the distributor so the rotor points at the # 1 terminal on the cap.
Remember that the rotor shaft will turn About 30 degrees when pushed in so install the disributor so the rotor is back one tooth then when all the way down it points to # 1

Thanks for the quick reply. But, I didn't swap the distributor..just removed the points.

First I would see if you have spark at the plug at all. Also, did you bypass the pink resistor wire? I know it's no fun, but you absolutely have to to get the Ignitor II to work. If the car started and ran before you worked on it, then it's got to be something you changed. Check the basics such as the air gap for the Ignitor's pickup, the wiring at both the coil and the 12v source and look for a loose coil wire. These things are too simple for it not to work.

Then check for a grounded out problem.
The wire or wires that go out the side hole of the distributor must not touch any metal part of the distributor. The screw and nut that hold the wires in the side outlet hole must go into a plastic holder so it dont touch the distributor.
On the points one end of the wire also connects to the points and this also must not touch any metal or it will ground out and not start.
The wire that comes out from the dist. with the points setup goes to the NEG terminal of the coil.
For the ignitor you must have 12 volts and in early mustang they had a resistor wire that only let about 8 volts to the coil for the points so you need to wire up a 12 volt wire to the ignitor and coil from your ignition as per your directions.

Did you remove the short ground wire inside the distributor? This is the one that grounds the breaker plate to the distributor body.

I hooked the ground wire back up after the install. My thought now is that maybe coil is gonzo.
