Hello Everyone,

I recently got a good deal on a 75 Mustang II Ghia with a 5.0 automatic. I have liked Mustangs since I was a kid and always wanted a 5.0 Mustang. However, i have never deep dived into them. When I first saw my Mustang II for sale I didnt realize it was a Mustang. I thought it was a great looking opd school car I could work on with my boys. When I got closed and realized it was a Mustang with a 5.0...I immediately asked seller what he wanted and bought it on.

I am now learning about them before I start getting into it. I have learned that the 5.0 in it is not the most powerful of 5.0s. But when I look around for crate engines or performance mods for it...I dont seem to see much.

What makes this 5.0 so different than others? I want this to be a fun car with some power. Something I can ultimately build or drop a crate 5.0 in it and supercharge it. Have fun with my boys and take to track occasionally. Eventually the whole car will be restored but that will take years for completion.

I attached some pics of her. Help me understand the difference in th 5.0 on the II's gents.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the red-headed step child and to the forums!!

Architecturally speaking, it is just like about any other 302 out there. The differences are really in the heads, cam, and the pistons used which lowered the emissions and subsequently the horsepower numbers. Any trick you do to another 302 will work with these as well as interchanging just about any other 302 in it's place. The only real differences come when they changed to a 50 ounce imbalance vs 28, so later model flexplates/flywheels and harmonic balancers DO NOT swap onto the II's 302 and vice versa. It's escaping me at the moment exactly when that change took place, I think it was for 84? A quick Google search can confirm when it actually took place. As you've started to find out, the aftermarket doesn't offer a lot for our cars specifically, but it is slowly coming around. The things you'll have a hard time finding or will pay a pretty penny for are headers and II specific parts like flywheels and bell housings off the top of my head. Oh, and some interior parts like the dash pad and consoles. Otherwise they're a fun project and pretty easy to work on and get accustomed to. Between here, a few Facebook groups, and I think there are a couple of II specific websites that are still operating, you should be able to find an answer to just about any question you have. Just ignore the haters on the internets and do you, that's what it's all about anyway! Welcome aboard!!

Looks like it might be a "silver edition" mustang...Silver with a dark red interior. It was a package available back then. Welcome!

Right on! I like the silver / silver combo. Haven't seen that in 20+ yrs.
The Mustang ii is got to be the smallest platform Ford ever put a overhead valve V8 in. Its like a go cart.

As a silver edition, does it have the hood ornament? Or marks where it was? A rare piece in mustang ii world.
I know real hot rods don't have hood ornamentation but just wanted to see it again.

I remember a friend of mine had a mII with a hood ornament. It was a white ghia with a dark red interior.It seemed silly at the time to me that such a compact car would have a hood ornament. Probably is quite rare.

It actually does have a red interior and crank style sunroof. It does have a spot on hood for an ornament. The ornament is not there anymore. At some point the previous owner put the King Cobra stickers on it.

I really like the look of the IIs and I am looking to have some fun with it in the future

Here are some pics of the interior. Let me know if you think it's a silver edition or maybe a an actual king Cobra special edition (j/k lol)

Yup that is a silver edition. I think they are kinda rare. You should have the hood ornament that looks like a horse in the middle of a giant roman numeral "II" like in the first pic above.

Well that's something else I cam tell my boys...rarer silver edition. In the future I will probably get another ornament.

My first thing is going to be getting the car looked over and fix any safety issues and new rims and tires.

Can any of you tell me the 4 lug bolt pattern and width of rims these have? Of if you know any specific site for some 4 lug rims that fit our IIs.

The wheels you have on there now look to be Summit Racing's in house brand Weld knock off, I have them on mine as well, just the other style. I dunno if Summit is still offering them, but I think the smallest width was 3" with the next smallest being 8". If you're looking to sell those and get another set, they will work well for someone who wants some skinnies on the front of their Fox.

If you're looking for different wheels, someone sells these with the correct bolt pattern and I've seen some cars with them, they look good on the II. You'll have to do a search to find the proper pattern, I don't remember who sells them. This picture comes from CJ Pony parts, but they don't offer them for our cars.
