New Shifter Question

I've had my MGW Shifter installed for a while but notice that it is still notchy from 1st to 2nd, etc. I ordered some RP Syncromax and am going to put that in when it gets here. The question I have is when I was installing the new shifter, the instructions mentioned about a "cup" that may or may not be on the stock shifter. It said if there is one, to take it off and put it on the new one, if you didn't have one then install it without it. Well I did have a black "cup" so I took it off the old stock shifter and put it on the new MGW Shifter. Once I did though, it didn't seem to pivot or move around like it did on the stock shifter. Do I even need this "cup"? Should I have put some grease on the ball at the end of the MGW Shifter before I put the cup on?

The notchiness you feel is in the tranny and really has nothing to do with the shifter itself other that it being a shorter throw and you feel it more than the stock one. Keep the "cup" on there because without it you will not be able to shift.

should I take it apart though and put some grease on it and then put the cup back on?

You dont need to grease the cup as long as its on there, tranny fluid comes up and splashes it.

The notchyness is possibly the shifter. Its new, its gotta break in first. Give it a little bit of driving time and it will get smoother.

Could be another thing or two.

Did you set the shift stops, or did you not use them?

And if your tranny was notchy before, it may just be the tranny like silvergto2 said.

The nochiness will never go away... unless you get a different transmission.

Well I dont think it's because it's new. I've had it for 4 months now. And I did not use the shifter stops since the 3650 has internal ones. I just hear so much about how a new short throw shifter makes it easier to shift especially for this crappy T-3650 tranny, but shifting from 1st to 2nd is still a bitch. I put it Redline Transmission fluid when I installed the MGW the first time. I think that I will drain that and try Royal Purple and go from there. Is there a problem with me pouring in the new fluid from the interior of the car with the shifter removed rather than trying to pump it into the fill plug?

Ive had bad luck with Syncromesh.

You can pour it from the top, just dont put too much like the person in the other thread who put in 8 quarts from the top!

Bad luck? Details! I read that post, he typed some to get some responses out of people...he said later on that he was kidding. Anyway tell me your bad luck before I F*** something up.

Not really bad luck but the Syncromesh didnt help at all and if I remember correctly it may have made it worse.

I use a Dextron III (Quaker State maybe) and it was much better. Ive been reading some good posts about Royal Purple though. Ive never tried it myself.

I've had my MGW for quite a couple of months now and it still feels "notchy". I think it is just the way our tranny is, and there is nothing you can do about it. I ended up going with Mobil 1 for new tranny fluid, but to be perfectly honest, didn't notice too much difference. (it certainly didn't get worse though). Either way, the MGW is so much better than stock, and the shorter shifts are awesome. I wouldn't worry about it too much, sounds like you did everything you could.

Thanks for the response. I don't know of hardly any other mustang owners near me so it's hard to compare mods, etc. :SNSign: always give me the emotional support I need.

I have a Pro 5.0 on my T3650 and have had a Steeda on my T-45 and both were notchy no matter what fluid was in them.

I've got the Steeda tri-ax, and its awesome in every way....but its still attached to a 3650!!@@!
!-2 is always going to be notchy, and it drives me nuts too!

I've had the MGW in my car for over a year. I love it.

If by "notchy" you mean it feels like it "clicks" into gear, then.... well, it's supposed to do that. At least with our tranmissions. I have driven cars with trannys that slip into gear with an effortless, buttery-smooth feel, but honestly I LIKE the click-click my tranny has. It feels very positive and I never have to think about whether it's all the way in gear or not.
