last night i put my new 3.80 posi third member for my 8 inch and when we were bolting the axles back in place we noticed the axles were incredibly hard to turn..we needed two hands and a lot of effort to turn them..the started feeling a little looser the more they got turned but still very tight..there isnt any oil in it yet so is this just because it's new or is something wrong with it

I would get some gear oil in there and see. Did you guys make sure to check all the tolerances etc when you installed the gears? If you feel confident with the work you did then get some oil and try it out. If you don't then I would take the third member to a reputable shop and have them double check your work.

a reputable shop specializing in ford rears built the rear for me so i'm confident with the work..i'll put some gear oil in and try it out again..this is probably a stupid question but is it just harder to turn because i went from a 40yr old open rear with 2.XX gears to a brand new 3.80 posi unit?

my new third member was a bit more stiff at first but that's because they only had some assembly lube in the gears. Once the gear oil gets in there I'm sure everything will be fine.
