Meeting - hijack

Thread Hijack - briefly - sorry :OT:
StangBanger - our Mustang Club is going to the National Museum of Patriotism on Saturday and meeting Sunday. If you can - come by, there are some great people in the club and I am sure someone could help out.

Hammer

PS. I know Autozone sells carb rebuild kits.

Yeah i called the local autozone and they have it 11.99 i think.
I used to be in a club back in the day with my GT, it was fun and met a lot of cool people. Then politics and egos took over and the club fell apart, which was really sad cuz i enjoyed talking to people about stangs and racing on friday nights at atlanta dragway.

Update

Carb is in pieces and soaking. I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult than it was. Accell pump diaphram is good but im replacing anyway due to ripping it when i took it out. The little passages and main jets were pretty cruddy along with the metering rods. I actually had fun taking it apart.

Let her soak for a long time. Take it out periodically and scrub, then dunk her back in and mow the lawn or watch some TV. If the gum has built up it can take quite some time to get it all out.

Use 5-6 cans of carb cleaner, some old toothbrushes and some compressed air. Might want to chase some curcuits with small wires too. A carb cannot be TOO clean.

Ive been using the Gumout brand carb and choke cleaner. It has super jet pressure and when you spray it it blasts all of the varnish away. When i pulled it out this morning it looked brand new. Im going to let it soak a while longer and give it once over with some wires.

Clean and slow, read all assembly instructions before starting, then go back and follow them step by step. Pay particular attention to setting the float level. Do not horse anything into place.
When you fire up the engine you may have further adjustments.
You sorted out EFI, this should not tax your abilities.

Keep us posted.

You posted while I was composing the last message. You are on the right track. Be very, no extremely, careful with using wire. The carb metal is very soft and a gouge in the wrong place could mean a new carb.

Yup, I leave the insulation on the wires I've used.

Update

Carb rebuild complete, Cleaned up the old plugs(gonna replace this week), another oil and filter change. Seafoam to clean any old residue in the intake.
New PCV valve. Vibration is gone and a lot better throttle response. Still sluggish a little but alot better than it was. Part of the problem i think is dragging brakes. I really don't know what to expect as far as acceleration because i have never driven or rode in one of these mustangs. I know the gears are 2.80 but i was thinking it would have a little more get up and go. Tranny does shift smooth as far as i can tell in my neigborhood. What can i expect out of the motor if it is running like it should? Can a stock 289 2V w/ a C4 light up the tires?:D Im getting there! LOL

The 289 is known to have small amounts of torque, the short stroke and relatively large bore cause that along with the small displacement. You put a low torque/high RPM reciprocating assembly in front of a 2.70-2.80 gear and it WILL be sluggish off the line. When the RPMs get over 3K do you still feel the sluggishness? What other car are you comparing the sluggishness to?

A stock 289 and the stock C4 should shred a tire (one only with open diff) if you try to burn it.

If you know your brakes are dragging I'd definitely fix that before driving it much.

The brakes are next in line, the only thing i have to compare to is my 93 GT. Gonna run a compression check this week.

Your 93 GT should smack the classic all over the place. Using the current HP rating method, a stock C code would only produce about 170 hp at the flywheel and ~130 at the tires. Put that with stock gears and I think you're looking at 17 to 18 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

Good job on the carb. May take some tuning now that the car is running.

Yeah that old gas had did a number on the plugs. Carb rebuild went easy and and the idle changed as soon as i put it back on. As soon as i cleaned the plugs the vibration went a way. I am not expecting much out of the motor for now just to cruise around in. Hopefully a new 4 barrel and intake will wake it up a little along with some 3.55 gearing or even 3.80.

your exactly right, change the carb, maybe intake..heads if you have the money...and new gears and it makes a WORLD of a difference. :nice:

Don't get me wrong fellas, I am NOT ragging on the 289. They were awesome motors and have some advantages over the 302. Do not forget that they won a lot of races in their day either, but they were never good at drag strips, they LOVE to rev and are best suited for a road course where the RPMs can be kept where they belong.
