hi,
im new to ford and im considering buying a 1998-1999 stang with the 4.6L

i just have a few questions:

how many km's do you get to a tank?
what are the major problems with the stang?
whats the difference between the 98 and 99 (power wise)
whats the 1/4 and 0-60 stock for both?
are there any aftermarket interior upgrades?

I'll try to help some. There are some aftermarket interior upgrades, you can buy painted panels or paint them yourself, you can get new gauges and other little stuff. No real problems with the stang, but in early 2001 I think they had tranny clunking problems. Also lately I've seen quite a few spun bearings, but that is probably due to the driver. Power difference between 98 and 99 is 215 HP compared to 260.

I understand the spun berrings is usually caused by forced induction in our cars. With a good driver you can hit 0-60 in 5.4sec in a 99+, asuming the tires are still sticky and you have good road conditions. I can often get 340 miles out of 14.5 gallons of gass. so you do the math. but usually when I do more city driving it hovers closer to 21mpg. Other wise not a whole lot of typical problems, as far as the tranny goes just don't power shift all the time and you'll be Otay! Yes, there are interior upgrades. Lots of billit aluminum pieces and other more flashy types of products from companies like APC.
The engines are very solid if you plan on staying N/A. The non forged 4.6 was not meant to take any kind of boost so your stuck around 6-8psi safely, others may say higher, but the higher you go the more likely it is she'll blow. so lets say a max of 375rwhp with a "safer" blower tune if you go that route.

there is a big differance between 98's and 99's, the body is differant and the engine in the 99 has 35 more hp i think(225 vs 260). I would recomend the 99 newer gt or better yet cobra. The aftermarket makes billet interior pieces I have door locks, headlight, def button, switch set, a/c knobs, and it looks pretty good. They also make sweet gauges like the autometer lunar cluster(only for 99+)

Yeah, unless you're really attatched the looks of the '96-'98's, the '99-up Mustangs have all of the advantages. I personally like the look of the '96-'98's and would spend the money doing a PI swap, but that's just me.

if you notice the 96-98 guys like to do a PI head swap. The reason is that 99+ Mustangs have much better heads and intake manifold design. they flow a lot more air (thats where the extra 35hp comes from) in turn they usualy react better to intake and exhaust mods.
As for problems, no real problems, just remember you are buying a ford, so expect over time to develop a few minor rattles and squeeks in the chasis (most of which are easily dealt with if you can find them. One last suggestion i would make is stay away from 01, if im not mistaken that was the first year for the t-3650 tranny and they are known for a little grind grom 1-2nd gear.

Performance Improved heads, people that have the 96-98 heads take them out and put 99 and up heads in they're cars. I imagine it's a lot easier said then done.

Don't forget that the PI swap includes the PI intake, as well as the heads. Combined, the two will bring the '96-'98's from about 215fwhp to around 270fwhp.

Well not quite

98 Mustang GT
- 4.6L SOHC V8
- 225 Horsepower (NOT 215) / 290 Torque I believe
- Older, bubble type body style
- Gas Mileage (almost the same as the 99)
- 1/4 time in about 14.7 guestimated I had a 98GT, but never brought it to the track...wasn't stock either...

99 Mustang GT (specs from ford)
- 4.6L SOHC V8 (9:38:1 Compression)
- 260 Horsepower @ 5250 RPM (Has PI or Power Improved Heads that the 98 Didn't have, which gives the 35 more hp).
- 302 Torque @ 4000 RPM
- Newer body style (fender flares, etc)
- Gas Milage: V8 auto = 17 city/24 hywy, V8 manual = 18 city/26 hywy
- 1/4 time in 14.6 (from ford's page) more like 14.1 i'd say
- 0-60mph in 6.0 seconds (according to ford)

EDIT: I used to own a 98GT automatic and now traded that in for my 2002 GT 5spd. And i loved the swap My 98GT had exhaust, gears, and other goodies, and it still isn't as fast as my stock 02 GT now Get a 99+ 5spd. I think the 99+ look better anyway, but thats a toss up for some

EDIT #2: The Insurance is another thing. The insurance change from my 98GT (in new jersey) was $2400 (no collision) for the year. Now it is $2800 (no collision) for the year. So the jump wasn't that bad, considering my new car is 4 years newer. Just an FYI and a heads up. Jersey also has some of the worst insurance, so...

You're right, the '98's did have 225hp, but the '96 and '97 had 215

You're half right. It wasn't the heads alone that were responsible for the 35-45hp jump and additional torque over their predecessors, but the combination of the PI heads and PI (longer/bigger runner), intake and If I'm not mistaken the '99-up utilizes a 70mm throttle body over the 65mm on the earlier 4.6s.

Also, the '99-up GT's use a returnless fuel system where the pre-99's use a return system like all other EFI Mustangs.

Adding PI heads and intake to a '96-'98 not only put you on equal terms with the '99 breathing capability, but also bump the compression ratio from 9.38:1 to approx 10.4:1. Tacking on another approx 10hp.

rated hp's are relative...if you dyno a 98 vs a 99 there is going to be a VERY noticeable power difference...the price between the two cars just doesn't warrant not going for the 99+

Yes and no. If you're mechanically inclined and want to swap it yourself, then the price difference between the two is about the cost difference in parts it would take to convert to the PI set up. And a lot of people just plain like the look of the '94-'98's better than the sharp edges of the newer model. I know I do.

Yes, you still end up with a car that’s a year older in the end, but you get the best of both worlds (if you like the earlier style) in the process.

true, and dyno tests show that a 98 mustang with PI heads make almost 20 more hp than a stock 99 stang because it has higher compression. might i add that its also slightly lighter (not to mention better looking IMO)

Well your one of the first i've heard that like the pre 99's over the current stangs...its all preference but i think of the 94-98's as ok...
