Bought a 1965 Mustang. Vin Matches car. However there is a horizontal flat milled in front of drivers side head it reads 6D11F or E. The intake is stamped with 5A........ as is the carb tag and exhaust manifolds. The metal tag on the intake reads:
289 65 5
H N 551 J Question: is this the original block or a 66? My production date acording to the VIN is August 22 1964. SER 130xxx

Whats the number on the block? (behind the starter)

New you were going to ask that. Need to get jack and ramps out of storage to remove starter. I asked this first because someone told me this number was the build date. According to this number it would be a 1976 289. I dont know if intake and exaust manifold would fit on an engine that new? I guess I need to check the actual casting number. But what is the number on this flat for?

6D11 is the date the engine was assembled.------ April 11 1966 not 1976. Your engine block isn't the original one for that car. Not a big deal unless you were planing on entering concourse car shows, where EVERY part on the car HAS to be original. Otherwise don't loose sleep over it.

Thanx for feedback. I will drop starter just for grins but i figured it would be a non matching block. Planned to make daily driver. not much rust. Engine runs great.
