I posted this over at Corral too but I think this section gets more traffic.

I am in need of a new transmission, I have the stock T5 and some unknown clutch in right now and I don't think it will last long with my new combo.

I have the car in my sig and am going to bump it up to 12-13psi + methanol injection and then later down the road a Systemax or Edelbrock intake.

Yes I know the heads are killing me but I do not have the funds to replace them right now.

I should be putting down a minimum of 400ftlb of tq to the wheels and I am afraid my current T5 is going to explode while I am on the dyno.

A T5 tranny from Astro with their gearset will run me about $2,000 and I definately cannot afford that right now. They sell their rebuilt T5's for around $600 which is affordable for me, but they say they are rated for 330ftlb of torque.

What do you guys think about either keeping my stock tranny and putting in a king cobra clutch?

What do you think about buying one of these $600 Astro's?

Also, is there any other type of T5 that I could put in for cheaper that can support my needs?

Thank you

Putting any money into a stock t5 with your combo is just a waste of time and money.
Use a Tremec or G force, don't know much about astro.
Make sure if you go gforce, you get the upgraded input shaft.

The 3550 is ok, just don't use any type of race clutch that has no slip, because when you slam gears, you still may break it.

Would the 3550 be able to handle 400ftlb fine?

How hard is it to rebuild a tranny with the Astro gears?

EDIT: I do not know what kind of clutch I have in there, but I think I am going to put a good king cobra one in it.

If I kept the stock tranny I would definately not track it, do you think it would be able to handle quite a few 2-3-4 gear pulls down the highway that I like to do while getting on?

I figure if my tires are slipping then there wont be a lot of stress on the tranny.

T5 will be fine as long as you dont miss a gear. So if you do alot of powershifting you probably will blow it up. Theres a few people running around with over 400 hp on a t5. I bought a TKO600 and I never powershift it, I just bought it for the added assurance. Just depends on what type of driver you are. Even when i feel the need for speed I still granny shift. My point is, that if money is a probablem and you cannot afford a tko or g-force right now you should be fine on the dyno. Just save up fo the money and when your ready, upgrade to one of the transmissions above. Just to give an ideaon price, i got a package deal from d&d performance that came with the tko600, bellhousing, clutch, and yoke all shipped to my door for 2200 bucks

Thank you for your help.

I don't plan on powershifting my tranny as I have heard of stock mustangs blowing them up when powershifted.

I just ordered the king cobra clutch and will be installing it once I get my engine/tranny out.

Thanks again.
