next generation hwy patrol car?

Alot of agencies around here have picked up the Intrepid. All the officers I know that drive them like all the room inside but hate the poor quality. The record I have seen is an Intrepid with 500 miles being "deadlined" and replaced due to some type of repair.
I would like to see the Hemi patrol cars, but a lot of police chiefs will see them as high liability because of horsepower. Motor vehicle accidents are already the #1 cause of death among police officers. I believe in today's law enforcement, supervisors will be afraid to put all of their officers in 350hp hemi's.

Isn't the idea of using a Mustang or Camaro is to blend in and not be noticed as a cop? If they are using Mustangs again I doubt they would have police markings like that. I've never seen a Mustang or Camaro police car that wasn't an unmarked. (Insert standard "this is just my thoughts" disclaimer)

well wheither it is a photochop or not I don't know but a friend of mine who is a Memphis Tenn. police officer claims he saw that very car - true or not who knows - I just think it would be nice to see mustangs on patrol again as long as I'm not the one being chased down

not trying to prove anyone wrong but, just to name a few:
Florida highway patrol has used plenty of fully marked mustangs as well as unmarked ones, georgia was another state , New York State troopers also had fully marked mustangs up until 93 when they got a better deal from chevy and they bought camaro's

No, the primary reason we would use a camaro or mustang is as an "interceptor". They work great on interstates or highways where you have to accelerate from 0 to 100 plus to catch a speeder.

Ford stopped certifying the mustang as a "police interceptor" with the new body style in 94. Chevy saw that opportunity and started producing a camaro with the police package.

yeah I know I forgot about the later mustangs used by some departments -
Other than the State Troopers and two cars that were seized from street racers New York Law Enforcement didn't use mustangs very often although I was pulled over once by a 95 cobra driven by some anti-crime officers (still don't know where it came from) ironically while I was driving an undercover yellow cab (could you imagine the look on our faces)

Haha, I guess you've never been to Texas then, for years the Texas State Hwy patrol used LX Fox body Mustangs for pursuit vehicles, then around 96-97 they began using Camaro Z28's. All these cars were fully marked and painted. They weren't undercover vehicles. The entrance to the Dallas North Tollway was a Hwy Patrol Mustang/Camaro parking lot for years. Its only now with the advent of no police pkg pony car to replace the aging camaros that they are a rare site.

All I know is that the current all white Camaros with the clear LED/low profile light bars that the CHP's got sneak up on you quick... and are scary.

some of the cops here are cruising around the freeway in the 01 GT's. usually blue or black and they have a small "el paso police" across the windshield (backwards so u can see it when ur getting pulled over). they also have some blended-in "el paso police department" on the side of both doors. its crap driving down the freeway and having to slow down at every gt you see..lol

The idea of Hemi-powered police interceptor cars scares me. While I think there are some states where it makes sense as an alternative to the DOHC variant of the Crown Vic, the 385HP of that motor is perhaps a greater liability than some police departments are ready to accept.

If the 03/04 Cobra were offered in automatic, somebody would probably be using one as a PI, but I've never heard of a PI car using manual transmission unless it was a vehicle seized by the state for street racing.

I am pretty sure that Ford will have a police interceptor package available for the new Mustang, though, because they stand to make some pretty solid extra sales from that. Those Camaros are getting close to their end-of-life for police duty in most states, and the states will be looking for something equally quick to replace them with.

Not true..
My best friend had a retired 1986 Mustang 5.0 Coupe PI with a 5 speed in it strait from the HWY patrol.

NY state troopers use a lot of Camaros on the highway. They used both 3rd and 4th Gen Camaros

The twin spotlights are cool...but... I wouldn't be caught dead in a police station wagon, I don't care if it was 600+hp. I know the new intrepid is based on that car, I hope it will look better. We just got word at our department this week of the Hemi police interceptor. If they are telling agencies about it then it must be on the way.

Many PDs are now using Tahoes. The Magnum would be a good mix of Tahoe, Crown Vic, and Camaro.

You get the big RWD V8 Sedan feel of a Crown Vic + The storage and utility of a Tahoe + the HP and speed of a Camaro out of the 340HP Hemi. Plus the Magnum has optional AWD for those places that see a lot of snow.

Here in South Carolina they used Mustangs, and now Camaros. Some are unmarked, but most have the exact same markings as the Crown Vis standard patrol cars. The idea of the Mustang and Camaro is NOT to "blend in" (they can do that in one of the many unmarked Crown Vics), but to have a FAST pursuit car. One that handles in traffic much better than the Crown Vic. My nephew was killed on the job when his Crown Vic cruiser was cut off while he chased a drug transporter (we think). He left the road and lost the big cruiser, down a bank and into a tree. Ironically, he was waiting for his new Camaro - it arrived 2 weeks later - and it almost definitely would have had the handling to manuver around the interfering car.

Oh, and there are BMW patrol cars in South Carolina, too. Gift from the BMW factory here. Full markings. Don't try to outrun one of those in the Interstate, they are German built - built for the Autobahn!!! :o)
