no brakelights

Hey,
I have a problem with my brake lights not working. a while ago i was driving and noticed that small amounts of smoke would come out of the steering collumn where the turn signal canceling switch was. then i noticed that my brake lights werent working unless i fiddled witht he turn signal lever. so i went and bought a turn signal switch from johns mustang for like 80 bucks or whatever and jsut finished wirign it up. i put the new wires into the plug one at a time in the correct locations after taking the old ones out of the plug one at a time. my brake lights still done work. there are 2 leftover wires on the switch that the orriginal switch didnt have. a yellow witha black stripe and a grey wire. does anyone know what these are for. its not in my manual. if someone could help me figure out how to get my brake lights working id appreciate it.

THanks,
Tom

Sounds like your brake pedal switch is bad. You can check this with a simple test light. Just probe the wires on the switch - when you press the pedal, your test light should light. If not, trace the wires back until you get power. I had the same problem recently and replaced my switch. If I remember right, the power to the switch comes off the main harness near the fuse block with a yellow connector with 3 ports. My issue had nothing to do with steering column wiring, but maybe you have a couple of issues going on there.
