no movement after clutch cable install

ok, i just put a new clutch cable in my car. everything is just like it came out. now the car does nothing until the pedal is 1-2inchs from the top of its travel and when it does grad its more like its slipping. its nothing special, just a stock replacement cable.

any ideas? i need some help here guys, this is my daily driver!

yep, its def. slipping. reverse or 1st clutch all the way out the car barely moves and giving it gas doesnt really speed anything up except the revs.

Stock "plastic" quadrant still intact? If so, pull up on clutch pedal firmly with your foot. You should hear it either click or hear a ratcheting sound.

This is the cable adjustment procedure. If this works, you should be good to go. If not, there are other issues.

i tried the adjustment but got nothing. i pulled with my hands pretty hard.

i just dont understand the problem, the only thing different is the cable, everything worked fine before the swap except that the clutch wouldnt disengage until the pedal was on the carpet ( cable was stretched bad.)

Did you release the quadrant/pawl mesh before installing the new cable?

Are you sure you don't have an aftermarket quadrant (it would be metal)?

its a plastic quad. car was stock when i got it. i knew the original owner and car from the time it was brand new.

what is the quad/pawl mesh? why cant the damn thing have a hydro. clutch !!!!

If lifting the pedal to adjust it doesn't work, you can manually adjust the stock pawl with your hand by reaching up under the dash and pushing up on it while depressing the pedal with your other hand. However, I have yet to be able to explain how to do this to anyone when I'm right there to show them exactly what to do... so I don't think you'll get what I'm saying either. My suggestion is to get rid of the stock parts and get a nice aftermarket quadrant with a firewall adjuster.

If your clutch throw is short at the tranny, then it will be long at the pedal. And if throw is long at the tranny it will be short at the pedal. I like a short and fast pedal. So you will have to set it up to have a lot of leverage at the tranny. To have a shorter throw. It works in reverse of what people think it should.

Did yo reset the quadrant/pawl?
If not, did you install an aftermarket quadrant and FWA?

And to be clear, you had a stock non-adjustable cable before and you replaced it with a stock style non-adjustable cable?

everything completely stock. i tried the quad.pawl adjust but got no clicks. i took the cable back out and reinstalled it just a min. ago and still the same problem. itll let the car move but any more than idle the clutch just slips.

im about to order an aftermarket quad and FWA right now. ive gotta get this car back on the road no matter what.

If the clutch really is slipping that badly, the point of engagement would be right at the top of the pedal. How are you able to get the cable installed if there's that much preload? You'd almost have to be prying the fork to get the cable connected.

a 3/4" drive craftsman breaker bar gave me enough leverage to get the cable put on. i had to use it to get the old cable off so i wasnt that worried when i had to use it to put the new one on.

the pedal catches so close to the top that i did an idle clutch dump out of frustration and the car just started backing itself up.

Since you can't get the quadrant/pawl to release so you can readjust it, I would not even start the car till you get the new quadrant and pawl. Or put the old cable back in (since you didn't seem to have an issue with slipping with that cable) till the new parts arrive.

I had the same exact problem but mine was we threaded the firewall adj together backwards so my clutch would not move car till last 1/4 inch of pedal height and it was a bitch to load the cable on was so tight. I bet your pedal is hard as hell to push down and real springy?. So u have a longer cable than u had before thats the only way that would happen if everything else is properly installed, no worries cause the firewall adj u ordered will fix your problem for sure!

hopefully the new parts will be in on monday so i can get back to driving my car. im sick of driving my other car because all it does is get unwanted attention from the wrong people (cops, ricers). i never thought i would miss driving my beater mustang so much.
