Had this problem with my '89 after replacing the factory stereo. In my case, there was an external factory amplifier that we had to remove; can't remember if it was in the dash, or under the passenger seat. That ended up being my problem......

if your car has the premium sound in it from the factory that is your problem! you have to unhook it and run another aftermarket amp! if you want an amp! James

You don't have to run another amp, but you need to bypass the factory amp under the dash. The good news is, the harness that's plugged into the amp is the same as the one that plugs into the stereo, so you'll just need to reach under there and unplug the amp. If you can, find someone with small hands, it's a tight squeeze when you're trying to reach the harness, IIRC.
