I have been given a primer by a LDS who posts here. In a nut shell, there is a US army mustang guy with whom I was corresponding during his tour in Afghanistan. He just got back to a base close by and I invited him and his fam over for a BBQ. I wanted to know what was what. I found out no booze, no caffeine, and that I should not break out the tatoo needles after dinner or turn on the computer to internet ****/gambling for the kids.

I just hope he doesn't try and convert me. I was born a snake handler and I'll die a snake handler.

First, it would be up to you as to whether or not you are converted. If you want to remain a snake handler, stay a snake handler. No problem.

LDS have been told not to take anything harmful into their bodies. This includes alcohol. tobacco, caffeine and addictive drugs. It goes farther than that but those are the basics. Also it is suggested not to get tattoos or body piercings.

LDS are asked to live to a high moral standard. Viewing pornography is discouraged, as well as gambling.

Your post pretty much mirrors what I got earlier in the day. thanks. As for the snake handler thing, that was kind of a joke. I borrowed it from the Simpsons. Moe uttered those lines once. You seem to have taken me seriously, which is ok.

i worked with a pretty high up mormon for a couple years......but that was a while ago....

they have to give like 10% (might be higher or lower ) of their wages to the church

they only have sex to reproduce (at least that is he said )

they have the largest data base of ancestor lineage in the world

they pray for deceased non-mormon relatives,going back, i believe 3-4 generations so that their souls can get into heaven.....

main stream, do not believe in bigamy ( i never could understand why ANYONE would want more than one wife anyway )

they are high up in the boyscouts

only men are high up in the church and the family

they don't believe in frivolous things ..........which pretty much means you don't see them throwing money at old mustangs

LDS do not only pray for ancestors, they perform saving ordinances (baptism & others) in order for the ancestors to get into heaven.

Women can hold certain leadership positions in the Church; only men can hold the priesthood of the Church.

LDS are encouraged to give 10% of wags to the Church, and can also make contributions to help the poor and to aid in humanitarian efforts throughout the world, as well as to donate time and effort to serve fellow men.

HQ is in Utah. Getting to the point that LDS are not in majority in the state. You will find members of the Church and meeting houses all over the world.

I have a few LDS friends into cars and other hobbies. Not that it's bad, but the Church can keep you busy. It's all good.

I could give a history lesson on the Mormons, but it generally does not reflect well on them.

They own Pepsi and the RJ Reynolds Tobacco company but denouce smoking and caffiene if that says anything.

My parents were Jehovah Witnesses and I was not the happiest about it as they started when I was 15 and took my birthday away. Ever since then, I have spent a lot of time researching a lot of history on religions and the Mormons and Witnesses seem to have the most shady pasts and origins.

Of course, that is just my humble opinion and I have always taken the "to each his own" stand on worship.

I tagged along with my long since ex-wife while she tried to “find herself” through various religions (Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Buddhism). It was very educational. The common thread I found in these religions is the attempt to, almost aggressively, keep you extremely busy with church oriented social activities.

I could modify and bust out the old "Some of my best friends are...." cliche; but I won't, even if it's true.

The typical member of the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" is probably the single most patriotic, reverent, honest, family-oriented person you'll ever meet. The Mormon church is one of the single most solid supporters of the Boy Scouts of America (which is how I met and associate with most of the Mormons I know); and I cannot find fault with any single point I just mentioned.

However, I'm just a little old Irish Catholic boy; and my beer, whiskey, coffee, "private time" with Mrs StangDreamin' are all mine...... and I couldn't change myself enough to suit their doctrine if my life depended on it. Plus, some of their dogma will never reconcile itself with the dogma under which I grew up. I mean, the Bible says Jesus' first miracle was changing water into wine at a wedding - how the heck does that coincide with their views on alcohol???
I personally think of my Mormon friends as great people who are hopelessly misguided - and I pray for them.

By the way, I thought it was Coca-Cola (or more accurately, the sugar-beet suppliers to Coke) that had ties in the upper echelons of the LDS church?
