I agree they are good people but they are very misguided. Lots of brainwashing goes into their lives since they were children they all question it at their mid teens and then they get on a spiritual high and brainwashing for 18 years will take its toll, then all hope is lost for them.

Basic things you should know.

No Alcohol, caffeine, drugs (Funny cause we are the highest state for using Prozac, so alcohol is bad but abusing a "legal" drug is okay, see what I mean by misguided)

No Premarital Sex
No involvement with people of the opposite sex or kissing until at least 16 years old
No making out, necking and what not unless you are engaged and ready for marriage
10% of your budget goes to the church to help expand their facilities, and the faith
In history they believed in polygamy just recently denounced it and ex-communicated them (we have a lot of polygamists here)
And apparently god is a racist because the Jerusalemites lived in america but were all killed by people who didn't follow the gospel, then god turned their skin red and abandoned them and they became known as the native americans we know today
All young men at the age of 19 must serve a mission for the church for two years to recruit new members
Adam and Eve lived in Jacksonville, Missouri
They do baptisms for the dead, basically people like me who will not convert, when I die they will take my name and put it on someone else and then baptize him and thus in doing that my spirit will be baptized with them, so life as an atheist and then eternity as a mormon basically (which I feel is a perversion of the sacred thing that is a humans free will)

That is the tip of the iceberg, I could ramble on for hours but will not for their sake. Keep in mind they are very nice people and some of my best friends are mormons. The problem is a lot of the poeple in this state are good people for the wrong reason. You guys think your mormons are bad the utah mormons are something completely different take your out of state mormons and increase their beliefs 100 fold and that is what I am surrounded by. I have spent hours combatting people off while they try their hardest to convert me.

I apologize in advance if anyone was offended by this I am just stating the truth.

While I am far from a religious expert and haven't been to church in far too long, I don't think the story included a wedding, but he did change water to wine. I used that bit when debating the Baptist anti-drinking policy with a very good Baptist friend of mine while we drank beer one night. He just shrugged and said the Baptist claimed that the wine was not fermented. Whatever

I really don't get into what religion people are--to each his own. I have friends of all nationalities and religions and as long as they do not push their beliefs on me we will continue as friends.

I've heard people mention before that "wine" is a translation problem and that it was really grape juice. Yeah right!
I've worked closely for the last year and a half with a mormon traveling around the world. He's constantly giving me a hard time about my lifestyle which is fairly moderate (only mild drinking and wenching ). Extremely non-tolerant of any non-mormon, but in other ways a stand-up person. Last outbust was at a train station in Seoul, Korea last week, where someone came up to us and in english wanted to tell us about some other christian faction I can't remember what it was. I was just mentioning I wasn't interested, but my co-worker blew up at the person and turned the tables and proceded to tell them about the book of mormon in loud a beligerent way.
To each his own, but there's no call for that.

Despite an annual national convention where rules are passed/approved each Baptist church is allowed to profess their own flavor to a large degree of some of the "rules". The no drinking/dancing thing has never been espoused anywhere I've been, and some Baptist churches have committed what amounts to heresey to others by announcing that baptism by submersion is not a requisite to salvation.

I don't know much about Mormomism, and don't really care to, I have one mormon friend who knows not to try and convert me and I'm fine with that. But is is possible that not all mormom churches profess the same thing. Other protestant denominations and of course the Catholic churches are far more rigid in the adherence to a central set of rules than some others (like Baptists who are generally considered very conservative). For example at my church there is no prohibition on the consumption of alcohol unless you are an deacon or employee of the church. You are expected to use judgement and not drink to excess, but I'm too old for that kind of activity anymore anyhow.

Edit: Oh yeah, the wine thing...the greek word used for wine did imply essentially a grape juice with very low alchohol content, kind of like near-beer. The greek word used in the New Testament for "strong drink" was used elsewhere. It had something to do with the animal skins they held it in during fermentation, if the alcohol content got too high the skins would burst so they drank it before it got too strong...or something like that. I truly admire the guy and his devotion to his faith and his family. But I have some questions about the Mormon religion that keep me from thinking they are the sole reciever of the Holy Word of Christ. First off, I may be mistaken, but hasn't the Mormon religion only been around since about 1860? I know older does not mean better, but the Catholic church has been in existence for quite a bit longer, how did the Mormons get to be respected in such a short time? The founder of the Mormon church is John Smith, who supposedly recieved the "true word" through a mystical salamander. Hmmm....I don't even know where to start on that one. Most religious artifacts are available for periodic viewing, even the shroud of turin, yet the Mormons keep their artifacts locked up tight, protecting them at all costs. Why the secrecy? If I knew the secret of eternal happiness, I'd consider it my responsiblity to share it, just like those azzholes that knock on my door on Saturday morning But having said that, most Mormons I know do hold themselves to a higher standard. A heck of alot higher than I can maintain! I'm also very careful not to judge anyone by their religion or even their lack of it!

To answer the original topic of this thread "tell me about Mormons," here are what we call the "Articles of Faith" (basic "list" of beliefs):

Just so everyone knows, I don't post much, but I have been around for a couple years here reading, reading, and reading about stangs. I have a '67 fasback S-code that I'm working on a little here and there depending on the weight of my wallet . I hope to one day be able to actually get it finished. To each his own, I can greatly respect those people who live their lives as good human beings, and am happy that they have found something that makes their life easier. I found myself a car and powerlifting for that. Growing up in Utah has taught me a lot the problem is that I have had more negative experiences than positive with any religion, and I feel much more qualified to go to heaven (If there is such place) because of the person I am more so (not go to hell because I didn't devote my life to glorifying some guy who died 2000 years ago that I haven't even seen proof of any of his claims) than a lot of the people that do lecture me on my lifestyle. Religion can be a very personal thing and should be left for the church, who cares what faith someone is just that they are good people is enough for me. There are those people that take things too far and that is when I get annoyed. Some people forget that these are STORIES that help illustrate how we can live to be better human beings not demonstrations of power from the almighty to make us all live in fear. Also living in Utah you can see the best and the worst. Unfortunately most religiously zealous people lose sight of the right reasons for believing what they do . In the end religion just divides people otherwise why should there even have to be a thread about this. All religious people need to remember religion is a TOOL to help people live their lives a little easier and make it better for others too, not the other way around. I am sick of seeing people being used as tools to procreate their beliefs on others so the higher ups get to stick a bigger wad of cash in their pockets. It is plain wrong. (you see this in all faiths I am not singling out the mormons, think about the kamikaze pilots of japan in WWII, Crusades, Suicide Bombers and Terrorists of the Middle East) For these reasons from a logical standpoint and the things I have seen religion do to people I have always disliked religion since I was a child and makes me fear for humanity.
