I just finished setting up some motive 3.90 gears and when I took it for a test drive it whines pretty bad mainly on decel from 20 to 45 mph, above that nothing.I set the crush sleeve at 20 in LBS set the lash at 0.10,used a pinion bearing that I ground to fit for setup and tried to set pinion depth with the marking compound, man I had the pinion and carrier in and out like 10 times at least.the pattern seemed ok however it was not real easy to read, not a real distinct pattern like when I did ford gears before, but it seemed centered as far as root to top,I dunno what to do next.did the 20 minute ride create a wear pattern?

Ok I may have found the prob,I took the carrier back out and checked the preload on the pinion and it is like 5"
LBS, if that, I guess the bearing seated some more.I guess ill dial it in again and pop the carrier in and see whats up.correct me if im wrong but wont having no preload cause a whine, especially since mine would disappear at higher speeds, when it seems to me that centrifugal force momentarily causes more load.but then again ill prolly set it all up again oil it up and whine city.

after you get the carrier in with the right shims put like .006" more shim on each side. and you did crush the crush sleeve correct? dont just tighten the nut down to 20 in/lbs. the sleeve has to be compressed. the 20 in/lbs is how much torque it takes to turn the pinion.

I hear all gears whine, only the ford racings ones don't. But even with the ford gears whine the higher numerically you go.

Uh you have no idea WTF you're talking about huh :rlaugh:

NO gears should whine IF set correctly!!!!!

My 4.30's are silent :nice:

GRN 92 LX,the rear was set up correctly, the proper preload was achieved, the backlash was dialed in and then an 0.06 shim was placed on each side to load the carrier bearings.I do have an idea what im talking about, but no I dont have the ford pinion depth tool,do you? how did you set up your pinion depth?tell youre little theory about no gears will whine if set up correctly to all the guys and shops that have set em up and still had whine, granted if set up correctly theoretically they should not whine but dont you think the manufacture of the gears can have some bearing.Im not the first person you have flamed, in looking at some of your other posts. do me a favor stay away from philly.Dam gotta go and get personal right.

1) I wasn't talking to you, I was responding to Jbeezy

2) If your gears are whining they were NOT set up right. Do gears come out of the factory whining? Didn't think so ;)

3) I don't care about your gears, mine don't whine and thats all that matters :) My buddy and I did them correctly :)

you are right about the gears not whining from the factory....that is because factory gears are higher than me after a skynard concert!!!! Lower you go (numerically higher) the more you will hear the whine :nice:

my 3.90s ( they are pro5.0) whine some
not all the time they give a slight hum when cruising in 4th or so at low rpms, not much at all and its pretty quiet i think a little gear whine is ok, just as long as its not ALL the time.

My 4.30's are quiet as a mouse (because we set them up correctly) :)

I'll have to ask my buddy if his factory 4.10's in his truck whine. I'll probably be wasting my breath as I already know the answer to that question. (no)

If your gears are whining or humming they were NOT set correctly :nice:

lots of it has to do with the application.....and the quality of the gear
