I realized after I looked @ this 1st pic that the sun made my side scoop insert look majorly faded in the 1st few pics. I promise it looks better in person LOL!!!

Might also want to consider a graduated neutral density filter. You can use that to expose the sky a step or two lower than the foreground, thereby rendering the sky with detail instead of washing it out.

The more you read/research about the dSLR, the more you will come to love it. I don't even have one yet, but I have been studying photography for a few years now and learned quite a bit from the internet. Of course, nothing beats real-world experience.

The D40 is a very nice camera to be on the lower end of the dSLR spectrum. I am actually considering picking one up myself. Or maybe a Canon XT body with an IS lens.

Either try faster shutters (although i think you're already doing that having no tripod) or lessing the exposure. Ur D40 have a thin wheel on the back face by your thumb, press the exposure compensation button then spin it to help with exposure compensation in .3 steps up to +/- 5.
Another tool would be to turn down the ISO (film speed), it helps lessen noise (although you have none) and lets the camera react to light slower, the picture will be a lil darker but the color will be richer.
Try using it on P. This is auto, but programmable. Turn the command dial left or right and it will automatically increase or decrease the shutter and aperture together (aperture going down in number to increase) based on light metering, ISO, and exposure compensation.

example:
• 1/50 F5.6 (turn left a click) P*
• 1/60 F5 (turn left a click) P*
• 1/80 F4.5 (metered) P
• 1/100 F4 (turn right a click) P*
• 1/125 F3.5 (turn right a click) P*
