I'm curious about all your opinions on Oil and filters. I have a low-yearly-mileage 02 GT. Currently I have 40,000 miles, usually drive about 7-8000 miles/year. I bought it 2 years ago @ 28K miles.
I usually change the oil fall and spring. If I take it on an extended cruise, or play rough with it, I'll usually change it then too.

I've read the "minimopar" oil filter study at http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html. Good stuff there. I just wish he had continued the study. He stopped in 2003. He had a list of "coming soon" filters. I would really have like to have seen the results of the K&N. It's expensive, but seems like a high quality filter. I don't mind spending $12 on a filter since I only change the oil a couple times a year, but I'd like to know if the $12 is getting me anything significantly better.

I've heard bad things about FRAM filters and Quaker State Oil.

So... what are the best and worst oils and filters in your opinions?

Try reading through this post first. Some good info and opinions in it.

http://gt500.drive9.com/~snforums/showthread.php?t=662810

Personally I use Mobil 1 oil & filters in both my '03 Cobra and my sons '05 'Stang.

Fram filters are not the best and I've heard stories of them failing and splitting. Quaker state dino oil used to have a bad reputation for sludge build up, but their synthetic oils get high marks.

I usually use a stock motorcraft filter and motorcraft 5w30 synthetic in my car but thinking of changing to mobil 1 since they get such rave reviews on this board.

Thanks -- that is a good thread. Looks like Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec are the popular picks. However, I use dino oil right now. I've heard that switching to synthetic can cause problems in an "established" engine.
Anyone have any thoughts concerning that?

Urban Legend. You can switch to synthetic at any time after the engine is broke in.

agreed

Now if it is a really old tired engine and it starts to leak alot of oil after switching then switching back to dino would be a good idea.

70k an engine (at least most, some engines are just total POS's... like certain Dodge engines in the Intrepids which cant seem to make it past 35-40k...) should just be getting broken in (not literally)... If it doesnt last at least twice that long then it was either abused or had poor previous matenence.

So no, synthetic isnt bad for an engine with 70k. Its not really bad for any engine. Only potential problems it causes would be that it cleans so well, that it "washes" away grime and buildup holding together certain seals, exposing leaks that were allready there, just hidden.

Synthetic is a great improvement over dino at any mileage.

The only time I would not run it is during break in. This is hugely debated. Lots of cars come factory prefilled with Mobil 1.

I use synthetic in my car with 65k and ive had no problems with it...also heard many talk about synthetic as bad for high mileage cars but none have really any proof to back it up a lot of hearsay.

There was a thread just recently regarding oil and filter decisions. In fact, there has been dozens of threads on the very topic of oil and filters. I suggest you do a search.

Personally, I use Amsoil EAO filters with Amsoil high performance 5w-30 motor oil, and I've had no problems with it.

We are using the Ford 5-20 oil and K&N filters on my v6 and my dad's Bullitt. I like the Ford oil myself, its a synthetic blend and seems to keep the motors running smoothly. I don't know if I'm wasting my money on the K&N filters, but they are easy to install/remove with 1" nut they have on the bottem and I've never had a gasket separate/stick to the block on either motor (always check that gasket every time !).

Guys here love M1, but on other sites it's not as popular (Bobistheoilguy).

My '02 is nearly identical to yours. I change the oil (M1 5W-30) and the filter (M1-210) just about every 6 months. Before I start the car up in spring (March) and after 5,000 miles. It's now my 2nd car and only gets driven on cloudless days and about 6-7k a year.

Most agree that Fram filters blow. Buy a better quality filter.

Right now I use motorcraft oil and filters. Does anyone in here run any high mileage oil?
