Oil cooler blew out, and ford doesn't have them anymore!

Any ideas? 96 cobra. My business is slow right now, so I can't blow $400
on something crazy. Ideas?

The entire oil cooler went south or what specifically went bad ? Maybe just an o-ring or gasket ?

If you do have to replace the entire unit, try some other places besides the dealership (like our classified section or other various internet based Ford parts websites).

The oil cooler O-ring is bad about going out. The oil cooler can be fixed in many cases by replacing the O-ring and the block to oil adapter gasket.

The O-ring is a Ford part (very large), but the oil filter adapter gasket is available from your local autoparts store.

Drain the coolant. Remove the oil filter. Remove the large Allen bolt through the center. This will give access to the filter to block adapter bolts.

Be sure to change the oil once everthing is back together.

Looks like for some reason there was a hole in it. Welded and it's fine now.

unrelated, my control arm is bent. So much for tubular arms...

Ahhhh!


The hole you welded up was probably a weep hole....AFAIK, it's supposed to be there.


Unless you got pics to prove you possibly cracked the oil cooler assembly or it somehow rotted through and/or developed a hole ?

So the inside there's some o-rings that are bad, I can't get them from the dealer.
A new cooler is something silly like $330.

I need a rebuild for the cooler internals (there's a cartridge thing with the rings) or
some other solution.

The oil cooler can be deleted. Use a standard GT style Romeo oil filter adapter.

Most Mustangs don't have oil coolers anyway. Ford dropped them because they aren't really needed and they leak alot.

That's odd that Ford does not have the O-ring. When I rebuilt mine, the replacement O-ring came from Ford.

Burns, where have you been, miss you in the SN-95 tech, come back and school these fools.
Yea, what burns said, the oil filter adapter has a gasket which makes the filter look like its leaking at times, both coolant and or oil.
