I just bought a 1991 5.8 on Saturday and I've got a few things that need fixing. This ranges from a new starter, to a new battery and possible engine repairs. We've (my parents and myself.) notice a small oil leak. We drove it from where we purchased it to our house which is a good three hour drive and the oil didn't decrease at all (or at the very least not drastically). It seems to be running from my engine down the powertrain and just drips from there. My parents think it may either be valve covers or valve gaskets. Does this seem likely or may there likely be bigger problems?

could be the valve cover gaskets but you should be able to look back there with a light and determine if it is comming from there or the lower intake gasket. The most common place in the lower intake gasket the rear end piece has trouble sealing if you dont use enough rvt.

+1 on that.

My 87 leaked like crazy. New rocker cover gaskets and intake gasket solved it. Mine was leaking so bad that I thought the oil pan was leaking!!

those are the 2 biggies along with the rear main seal. I got my intake to stop with out removing it to replace the gasket, I sprayed along the back with brake cleaner an wiped it a few times. then got some rtv gasket in a tube an packed all along the seam between the block an the rear of the intake a few times an let it dry over night an that held it for 2 years until i replaced the intake. the rubber valve cover gaskets are great for controlling leaks too.
