Oil Level

I just changed the oil in my 1989 Mustang GT. I drained the oil by removing the filler lid, oil filter, and both drain plugs on flat ground. I let it drain for about 15 mins. I changed the oil filter and added 5 quarts of oil. I ran the car to check for leaks, oil pressure and then I looked at the dipstick and it reads like this:

-
-
-
-full
-
-
-
-
-add

I am above my full line by about 3/4in. I think I did everything right. What will it do to my car running that oil level? Maybe the wrong dipstick is in my car? The dipstick reads:

model# E7SE-6750-BA M

Please help me with this problem. Thanks.

If my car werent in the shop right now Id go check my dip stick but you can drain just a little bit of the oil out....its not hard....just messy sometimes

Thats normal. Because your car holds 4.5 quarts.

That would make it high if it only takes 4.5 quarts....but everyone I have asked and the book said 5 quarts!?

Though you only supposedly need 4.5-4.7 quarts the real issue is that you have the infamous and very common incorrect reading dipstick. I learned the hard way several yrs ago that I also have, as do SEVERAL others, incorrect reading dipsticks. Best option is to start the car after your change to let the oil get all in place. After everythings cooled off pull the dipstick and with a file (or any tool to mark the dipstick)make a mark on your dipstick that indicates full. Now you will easily be able to read full on a consistant basis..no guessing. I added an aftermarket FMS dipstick to the new engine in hope that this problem would be corrected...nope new stick reads a quart high as well..oh well what can you do.

thats strange, cause every time i change my oil in my 92 gt it holds 4 1/2 to 5 quarts. the way your describibg it it's like your a quart too full. Actually i just called a friend of mine that works at ford, and that should be the correct dipstick.

The 5.0L motor holds 5 quarts of oil, plain and simply (just like Derek said). Some dipsticks were mismarked at the factory. I would let the oil sit (5 quarts in the system, having been circulated) and then remark the dipstick. My new full mark is near the word "Full" IIRC.

My full point on my dip stick with 5 liters of oil is also at the beginning of the "word" full .

So if I drain my oil completely, change my filter, add 5 full quarts of oil, let the car run for a few minutes and cool down...then mark my dipstick were the oil level is at ...that will safely be my new full mark?

By the way the new full mark is close to the words "full".

That's exactly what you need to do. Hissin50 was the one to make me aware of this a couple yrs back...always enjoy having a chance to pass on that tidbit once in a while.

Yes, these guys are correct about the dipstick not reading right. Just scribe it when full like mentioned and you should be just fine.

Once upon a time, when I was working at shell, a jetta full of mexicans pulled into station billowing blue smoke everywhere. They got out of the car screaming and asking what was wrong. I popped the hood and checked the oil...they had filled it to the very top, and i mean the oil cap, when they had last changed it (less than 10minutes ago). When I hoisted the car up it took about 20 minutes to drain the oil....and surprisingly the car still ran after it was all said and done.

If you look in the Ford Service Manual it even tells you it is normal for the level to be above Full.
