When exactly does it tend to come on. Cold engine, hot engine, while cruising or at idle?

I bet it comes on at idle with engine at normal operating temp.

My bad. For some dumb reason I was thinking oil pressure light which our cars don’t have since they have a gauge instead.

You’re taking low oil warning light.

I’ll say this. Both my 92 and 93 factory dip stick read incorrect. They were saying full when the thing was actually 1 quart low. Ford made a bunch of them this way.

Maybe your dipstick is wrong too. J richker describes a good way to file new marks on the stick. I’ll search and see if I can find it.

This is a quote from jrichker in a previous thread about dipstick marks being wrong from the factory.

The dipstick is a bigger liar than most fishermen that I have met.

“Drain both front & rear sumps, change the filter and add 4 quarts oil. Start the engine and let it idle 2minutes or so. Shut it off, wait 2minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off and stick it back in. Pull it out again and take note of the oil level. I marked the dipstick with a scratch from a file at the 4 quart level.

Add the 5th quart, start the engine and let it idle 2 minutes or so. Shut it off, wait 2 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan. Pull the dipstickout, wipe it off and stick it back in. Pullit out again and take note of the oil level; it won't be anywhere near thefactory full marks. I marked thedipstick with a scratch from a file atthe 5 quart level, which is about 1"above the factory full mark.”

How soon until your next oil change??

What I'd do if my light came on is to set up to do an oil change. Drain the old oil, plus oil in the filter into a clean oil pan that doesn't have oil already into it. Dump in your 5 new qts, and then drain all the old oil back into the 5qt bottle and actually measure it.

I believe that light should come on exactly 1 qt low, so if you have 4 qts in the bottle, you are burning/losing oil.

The sensor is located on the pass side of the oil pan, and is a low oil light only.
