I am working on the engine for my 71 mustang. I thought I had everything I needed to put it all together. (the engine) I was wrong. I had an "extra" oil pan in the garage, and so I cleaned it, stripped it, scraped it, and painted it. Then today, when I tried to bolt it on, I found out that I had a nice example, of what I wanted to replace!

So now I'm looking for a new pan. The point of this though, is "what do you do/use to fill the hole in the side of the block, where the dip stick tube goes into the pan?"

Is there a common, easy cheap solution to getting rid of that extra hole?

I plugged the dipstick hole on mine with a small cork and RTV sealant. I tried to find a metal freeze plug to fit but could not. Been a few years and no leaks, but am sure there is a better way to do this. I know you could tap the hole and put a bolt in it, but didn't want to chance getting metal shavings in the block.

You could leave the dipstick tube in the block and then piece of hose on it and attach a breather to the end of it, have a rigged crankcase vent.....im mainly just being silly there, A simple plug as mentioned earlier would probably be just fine....maybe plug it up with some JB or quicksteel.

my late model 302 was tapped and plugged with a threaded plug. But I guess you could plug it with any thing really. I second the JB weld for late solution.

1/8" NPT tap + 1/8" npt plug = solution.

I got the tap out and tapped for a plug. This is a permanent solution. Resist the urge to do "good enough". Your car is worth it.
