Ok, I don't know too much about oil pumps but is this shaft supposed to be loose and falling out of the pump like this?

Its supposed to have a small clip that goes on the shaft towards the block.

Correct. If you look down the distributor hole, you'll see this (pic stolen from n2o-89fox):

The little star washer should be pretty much right up against the bottom side of that to prevent the oil pump driveshaft from falling out.

I saw that washer on the shaft. It seemed pretty tight on the shaft, is it adjustable to make it tight on the pump?

It fits tight on the shaft. Install it on the shaft, install the shaft and move the clip up until it abolut 1/16- 1/8 from the block. The clip keeps the shaft from coming out when you remove your dizzy.

Ok I see. I just wasn't sure if I was supposed to slide that down or not. I'll go mess with it in the morning. Thanks

Ok, I just went out and messed with it and I think a couple of the teeth are bent and it's just not holding well. I know as soon as I put the engine in and have to pull the dist. at some point that shaft is going to drop. Where can I get a replacement clip?

You can get a hardened shaft from ARP for about $30 that comes with a new clip, great for peace of mind that if your oil pump goes, your ignition will shut off seeing that it will not twist.

Or if your in a hurry and on the cheap, i'm sure your local ace/lowes has it in the fasteners section.
