Sorry Dude!

Look at the bright side.

Now you've had 3mo. of practice, so taking the motor back apart will be sooo easy.

That sucks

Can you get to the shaft without pulling everything apart.

Do you have the little clip on the shaft? If not, I'd tell you how to make a tool to pull the pump-drive shaft out. I'm guessing the clip is on (as it should be) and you are going to have to pull the oil pan and get that shaft in right.......and don't put the pan back on until you're SURE it is

as I look down in to where the dist goes all I can see is gear teeth to the left with the shaft wedged in a left leaning position.

Some how I managed to drop oil-pump down and get shaft out.I removed steering rack and dropped pan onto k frame. This allowed me just enough room to remove both 9/16 bolts holding up pump.
My question is can I drop NEW shaft down through dizzy hole. Will that rim that is up at top of shaft keep it from reaching pump?the reason I ask is with pan dropped down onto k frame I do not have enough room to put it up through bottom?????wewww

That clip is on there to prevent the shaft from being pulled OUT of the pump when pulling out the dizzy. It won't allow you to slip it down through the top, unless you take that clip off, which I don't recommend; if you go to pull the dizzy sometime, or even pull out the priming tool, it could pull the shaft up and drop it down into the oil pan. Can you somehow lift the motor up enough to get the oil pan out, and get the shaft in the right way?

The pump driveshaft goes in from the BOTTOM!! Stick it up through the hole (distributor) and then put the pump on. Once the driveshaft is in, and before you button everything up, get the priming tool and put it down in the hole and spin it by HAND to see if there is a slight drag. That should tell you if everything is cool.

I did this once in my car. The oil pump let go at 6 grand at the big end of the drag strip! It twisted the driveshaft so bad that it looked like a drillbit when it came out! It was very hard to do with the engine in the car. A couple of years later I rebuilt the motor and have had the motor out a couple of times. I know it sounds backwards, but it takes less time to pull the motor, change the pump, and put it back in. It took me a weekend to change the pump in the pan and it only takes me about 2 hours to pull the motor and 3 or so to put it back in.

Oh yeah, thanks MOBIL 1! After the pump went, the car still ran and made good oil pressure for 2 more years. When I rebuilt the motor, the bearings were like brand new!

I would hesitate to jack the motor up by the balancer. If the balancer gets out of whack you'll be buying a new one of those to boot. Maybe its not an issue, but I would look for another way. Possibly using the engine hoist to lift the motor.

DO NOT jack the motor up by the balancer, very bad idea. Rent yourself a cherry picker, bolt it to the heads, and lift the motor out until you have enough room to bolt the the oil pump and driveshaft the proper way.
