I'm almost finished putting my engine together and I noticed that the oil pump shaft was not put in. Damn! :bang: I'm gonna try putting it in from the top. I 'll put a dab of silicon on the tip to hold it in the pump. If I drop it, then I'll take the pan back off.
Anyone else ever done this?

If you put it in from the top you can't have the clip installed. This could be ok till the first time you pull the distributor and it falls in the pan. If you already have the engine out do yourself a favor and pull the pan so you can install with the clip.

yup, chances are it's gonna fall......i did the oil pump and shaft with the motor still in the car.....just undo the motor mount bolts, jack up the motor at the front near the dampner, drop the pan, won't come all the way out, but close enough.........then up in your shaft, and button it all back up..........hotwheels

Well, I read many of the posts concerning forgetting to put the oil pump shaft in before bolting up the oil pan. It is nice for me to see that I am not the only dummy who forgot to do this (what i get for working on chevys). I hope others will find comfort in sharing my misery as well.

Here is what I'm going to try...Heatshrink tubing. I'm going to stick that shaft in the distributor and use heatshrink tubing to keep it from falling out. Even when I have to pull the distributor again it should stay.

I know, I know...PULL THE PAN! Well, I'm not going to do it the right way. I'm going to do it the "livin in southern OHIO, my family is from KY, ain't no way I'm going to make that oil pan leak, laying on my back, workin' in the gravel even when it's snowing and raining" way.

Wish me luck and thanks for your support.:flag:

when i bought my mustang there was no clip installed on my oil-pump shaft. one day i pulled my dist. and the shaft stuck in the bottom of the dist. and fell onto my motor. long story short it happened to me an......WHAT A PAIN IN MY AZZ!!!!!! puttin it in from the top is some half-assed shiite...PB
