oil pump shaft

Has anyone ever replaced it going down through the top instead of taking off the oil pan?

uhm thats how its installed, dont see why it wouldnt come out like that

Um, no, that is NOT how it's installed. It's supposed to be installed from the bottom so you can position the umbrella clip that keeps the oil pump end of the shaft from coming out when/if the dizzy is ever pulled later on.

So to answer the OPs question, yes you can replace the shaft from the top, but that is only if you can get it to pull out because of the above mentioned clip. If you are successful at getting the shaft out, that will mean the clip has fallen into the oil pan and will need to be retrieved with a magnet through the oil drain hole. Then when you put the new shaft in, there won't be a clip to hold it in place if the dizzy is ever removed. You'll run the risk of having the shaft drop into the oil pan... and that will be a little more difficult to get out than a small clip.

It always takes me 2 or 3 tries to stab a dizzy and get it where I want it, so with each try, you're going to be risking pulling the shaft out of the oil pump. An old school trick is to clean the top of the shaft and the hole it goes into on the dizzy so they slide in and out of each other easily. Then put some heavy grease on the end of the shaft that goes into the pump, this will cause a vacuum once it's put in and help keep it from pulling out when you're trying to stab the dizzy.

You're only going to have a few tries to get the dizzy right , then don't ever pull the dizzy again... or at least not until you plan on having the engine out of the car so you can pull the pan and get the shaft back out.

What if I drill a small hole through the shaft and bottom of dizzy and put a roll pin in? So the shaft will not fall out.

you can remove and reinstall the op drive shaft with the engine still in the car. after jacking up the car it took me ~an hour to replace the pump and shaft.

Well thats how i have always installed them and its never been an issue, but then again i have never used a stock style oil pump shaft and have only used ARP shafts that are substantially thicker

so i gather you don't install the clip on the shaft?
