OIL Sending Unit?

My 90' vert has been leaking oil lately and I put new valve cover gaskets on it and a new oil pan gasket. The rear main is not leaking, but it is still leaking. When I drive my car the oil pressure gauge reads a little less than half way, but after about 5 minutes my check engine light will come on and my oil pressure decreases. A friend of mine told me that it is my oil sending unit, and someone else old me that I should try using thinner oil. Has anyone had this problem?

Oil pressure is going to decrease after your car warms up. Not sure about your check engine light though.

You are going to need an autometer oil pressure gauge, you can't really get an accurate assessment of whats going on with the stock gauge, there very well could be nothing wrong. There's no point in changing the stock sender. An autometer gauge is only like 50 bucks, then you need to pick a mounting method. This eliminates the sender completely

I would think thinner oil would make the pressure problems worse.

Check engine light coming on when the car is warmed up after driving is probably the egr valve or something else.

If you are getting the CE light the first thing to do is pull the codes.

It could also be that your low oil sensor is acting up.
It's the sensor with the wire on it at the bottom of your oil pan ,next to the drain plug if you were wondering where it's at.

TS is spot on!
make sure the oil level is up to par. also, thinner oil = less oil pressure. i'm not saying to try switching oil at all! just info.

you need to get a real gauge as 2000 said and go from there.

The gauge is a good idea, I am glad I put mine it. As for the codes moset autozones will run them for free or you can get a code scanner at wal-mart for about $20.00.
