OK Guys, how do i put my new head unit in?!

hi, i got a new panosonic head unit. i got my stock one out. first of all, the cassette player and the little tray underneath it ar attached, how do i attach the tray to the new one and will it fit? second of all, how do i wire it? can i just cut and splice wires or d i need to go get a harness of some sort. im lost here, help. thanks a lot!!!

You'll need to go to your local car stereo shop (best buy, circuit city, maybe radio shack, etc..) there's an adapter plate the you'll need, also you'll need the wiring harness to plug into the factory plugs < this makes it easier. However, if you have never done this, find a friend that has to show you how it's done. Or just pay to have it done. Crutchfield's also has what you need.

you need a din reducer as well i have this one
Din Reducer

you need to drill small holes in the plastic but it holds and looks much better than the snap in kind.

hook up all the wires/ with the wire harness (i do this out side the car and make everything tight and short, tape it all up so its very neat) then you just mount the cage in your new din reducer by bending the tabs, hook up your wire harnesses (2) any your good to go, now if you have premium sound there will be much more to do..

THANKS!!!!!!! went tonight and got the harness and that same din reducer stroked and blow ( by the way you have my dream setup on your car and it will look much nicer than the stock piece!!!!!!! we just wrapped the speaker wires together and taped them same with the ground, power, and constant, and i was in business!!! looks soooo good! tommorow i will trim the tabs off the din reducer and drill the holes and mount everythign in. THANKS A LOT!

Hey, when i go to the next track, is it normal to hear the cd spinning thrue the speakers and some sort of other noise? Also, i just wrapped the wires around each other and taped them with electrical tape, should i undo em and but splice them? thanks

Having those connections tight and a really good ground will help keep ancillary noise out of the system.

I would atleast butt splice the wires (keep them twisted like you have them) and slide the wires into one end of a butt splice. Using the splice in the conventional way (one wire from each side of the butt splice) can result in poor conductivity.

solder and heat shrink is the way to go. No worries about corrision then that sometimes happens

Looks good, i have the same adapter plate only mine has an EQ in the bottom slot.
Not sure about the sound you hear while changing tracks though.Is it a whining sound that goes up and down with rpm's??

ive never heard of a ground loop situation through a HU,w/o any amps, unless you didn't hook up the ground wire at all, thats whats confusing about the situation.

hissin i dont see how putting one wire in each end of a butt would be a worse connection and twisting them together and putting them in one side of the butt (thats what i gathered from your post) ive always been told that the conventional way is best. either way i know is better than twisting wires together and taping them up, or using those crappy screw-on connectors for home stereo.


and yes of course soldering is the best way if you know how to do it right.

Most butt connectors that DIYers use are a bit larger than average speaker wire (18-16 AWG connectors seem to be popular). This allows for the wire to work its way loose if the crimp is not well-done.

By twisting the wires together it adds a second (and primary) means of making the connection.

I am sure you are quite good at crimping, but some folks arent and the twist/crimp on one side method seems to hold better than conventional splices.

i got good tight connections, but still a little noise, how do i fix this? someone said something about a ballast resistor? and when i try to turn it off it wont go off and just says adjust. whats that all about? thanks
