Ok so the wife and kid are going out for the day tommarrow and i have some time to kill and $ to spend. I was thinking of going over to Dallas Mustang in the morning and picking up something to do. I have a stock 2001 GT except for the pedals and I'd like an easy DIY project for a begginer. Could be cosmetic or performance and around 100 - 150.

Here's some of the ideas that I had so far.

  • Change the spark plugs and maybe wires - no idea how I'd have to find some instructions.
  • Chin Spoiler - not sure if they carry that
  • Grill Delete - not sure if they carry that either
  • Different Shifter, maybe a Tri-Ax
  • Some kind of straight through air pipe to replace the accordian
  • CAI, one that goes to the fender well, cheesy but the look nice
  • Brushed Aluminum door sills
  • H pipe, are those doable on ramps? and are they legal in TX?
  • New mufflers, though I'd probably have to take those somewhere and have em put in, I dont think DM does the install do they?

Thats all i can think of, any reccomendations?

If it were my car, i would save for some 4.10s. That will make you the most happy and be the best bang for the buck, but if thats what you are htining, i say new shifter because it will help you shift, and help your tranny.

look into the following for your first mods
shifter, gears, exhaust and possibly K&N along w/ plenum and throttle body. save your money if you need to and wait to buy something that you will get your money out of. If you are set on buying something tomorrow and cannot afford one of the listed mods, go w/ the grill delete and chin spoiler.

regarding the hpipe, it is legal in texas if you have cats. easily done on ramps too just get an o/r hpipe and either find a friend to pass your car at emissions time or swap the stock hpipe on for inspection
good luck w/ your decision

I think a tri-ax is closer to $200. We all know how that mod itch is a bitch, but save for some gears if you want the most bang for your buck. IMO, most of the small intake stuff isn't worth it unless you are doing it in combination with other mods ($!).

No plug wires on a 2001 GT.
I'd get the shifter. Get a tube of RTV silicone (high temp red) and with a basic socket set, you'll be done in about 45 min, enjoying every shift for the rest of your life.
I prefer the Pro 5.0 over the Tri-Ax. Got both, but the Pro 5.0 is racier, but easy to shift on a daily driver. Tri-Ax is more like stock (the handle shape, that is), but both shift very well and both are quality pieces.
This is a great Saturday afternoon project.
Enjoy!!!

keep saving up. Dont waste money on little BS bolt ons. A shifter is a good start, though, every stick mustang should have one. But after that, save up for good stuff. Like T&J heads, cams, full exhaust, blower, ect.

reread the post, he was talking about the mod "itch" not the mod itself.

For 100-150 I'd get a grill delete and chin spoiler if you just want something simple to enjoy working on your car. If you're looking for performance, you really need to save up a little more. 150 won't buy much on a car, instead of an h-pipe, have you considered the SLP x-pipe? It's got race pipes where you can swap cats in quite easily and it's also designed so that you can use it with SLP long tubes later on without having to hack up the X-pipe or buy a new one. Just a thought

problem solved. I stayed up too late last night and over slept so I didnt get up in time to get out to DM. I love their shop but hate the saturday hours they keep.

So it looks like I'll be ordering a chin spoiler with the $ i got for selling some stuff on EBAY last week and saving the 150. Though I may spend some of that if I go to Midnight Madness at the denton track next week.
