Okay, how do I stop my hood from flying off?

Wow.

I swear it's getting it's worse day by day. My hood flutters up and down around 65mph and much past 70mph it's hopping up and down.

I can take it to Ford and say "wtf" but is there anything you all can tell me to save me some time in the getting-it-fixed process?

I bit the bullit when my hood popped on me at the drag strip and installed hood pins. I got mine at autozone since the Ford Racing pins weren't tall enough for where I wanted to install them. I think some people had success by adjusting the rubber stops that the hood is supposed to sit on. I tried that and it didn't help me.

Not to be little your problem, but why wouldnt you take the car to the dealer like tomorrow? I am pretty freaked out by some of the posts I read. I mean if I ever saw the SLIGHTEST MOVEMENT of my hood other than when I open it, that would be a big deal to me. Hopping up and down is WAY OUT OF LINE!!

How can a brand new car do this? Sorry, I just cant believe some of the horror stories I have heard about our cars. My 07 GT is perfect. I hope it stays that way.

mine too!

My hood also "buffets" @ around 120 km (70 mph). Has anyone taken theirs to a dealer? If so, what was the outcome?

Mine is an '07.

But, on the other hand, this is the only issue that I've had with the car.

I really do love this car!!!

The hoods do not fly off. No need to over react.

If latch mechanisms and safety latches were failing you would quickly see a massive recall.

Lots of cars hoods "float" or lift a slight amount at speed, it's just physics at work. So long as the latch is in working order, the hood will not fly back. If it is doing it a great deal and it truly concerns you, you should certainly take it in for warranty work to see if they can do anything about it.

My hood deflects about 1/8th of an inch, possibly as much as 1/4" when cruising at 80mph+.

Now granted I don't travel at those speeds often as it is illegal but it is a concern.

My previous car, a Nissan 350z, hood didn't move at all. Not even when hitting 147mph on the way to Las Vegas.

No offense but you obviously haven't driven the car very fast. When I had my stock hood it would begin to flap like a piece of paper around 110-120mph. The hood has an aluminum skin and since the mustang has a large front grill the air pressure is much greater than the negative pressure at the base of the windshield causing it to flap.

I remember being in a friends Porsche narrow body turbo lightweight with aluminum body panels. At around 160mph the hood would bow inwards like you're crushing a beer can.

No offense. but... I drive my S197 70-85mph daily for 60 miles or so,, No hood movement at all (car built 26 June 05). I drive this car at 90-125 monthly at least.. still no hood movement that I can notice while driving. There must be something different with some cars that allow some hoods to move. I believe there have been a few posts that talk about a dealer tech that was able to make adjustments which fixed the problem. Again, that tells me, it's an installation/set up issue. Not systemic design.

On my way to Steeda Stampede Saturday morning I noticed my hood was flexing at around 120... I was worried to, but at 140 it did nothing more then flex and wobble.

I take no offense and Im sorry your hood is akin to a piece of paper. But I thought you need to know that I never run under 80mph on the highway. The speed limit here in Texas on I-10 is 80 mph. This means of course most people are running 90 to 100 out in west Texas. I have ran 145 and never ever once saw the slightest movement of my hood. If I had, I would be scared to drive it!

I dont know whats wrong, with your set up, but its bad! I say again, why wouldnt a man take his car to the dealer, and have this takin care of? A short ride with the shop forman, or tech would be all they need to see for there self how dangerous your car is. I get the strong feeling you think it's NORMAL! Or at least no big deal.

It is only the skin that is flapping due to the underhood pressure. This is why the shelbys have the current (ugly)hood vents as opposed to the beautiful hood that was on the prototype.
I'm running the Steeda Race Hood now. I'll be at JDM day in NJ in a few weeks and I'll be picking up my hood pins there for this one.

Now that is one pretty stang!! I love that hood! Not too high and weird looking, nothing to have to look around. But it sets off the car real well. All I can see and it may be just the picture is the hood doesnt close or even up with the fender exactly, but its looks adjustable.

I had the front facia installed last week. It needs to be shaved at the top of the vertical posts a little because it is rubbing. With the hood pins on it should pull it down a little or I may just add a couple of body shims to raise the fender edges.

It goes into winter storage soon so I'll have 4 months to work on it.

thrump rrr is right about the design (and aluminum material) of the hood and the large air pressure that develops under the hood...most people have found that by adjusting the outside rubber bumper stoppers where the latch is located has helped a great deal. You obviously want to raise them a bit (turning counterclockwise...no more that two turns at time and then testing it)...it should really help...but also remember that the more you raise them, the harder it may be to close the hood and the level of the hood will raise when viewing it alongside it and comparing it to your fenders...mine was doing it around 95MPH and ever sinde I've adjusted it (slightly) I've have gone a bit higher and no hood flutter...of course, if there is a strong headwind or sidewind on the highway...that will add to the problem...

I noticed while detailing the car that the front part of the hood was way low. It's didn't line up with the 1/4 panels.

So I adjusted the hood bumpers and now it looks nice and has no where near the "play".

Next time I am on the freeway I will see if it flutters as bad. Here's hoping!

I actually had my hood latch let go one day at about 110 mph! The secondary latch kept it from coming all the way up, but it did scare me. No problems since though. Sometimes I notice a flutter at 100+, but not less.
