I can't stand my paint...

It's flawed... one of those "twenty footers". And I can't stand it when people look at it and think that I painted it. It looks like crap. But I'm not in the position financially to do anything about it for a couple of years. I have a 5 speed swap and engine build to do first.

Is there anything really wrong with stripping down a car and like one person said... "spray bomb it to prevent rust"? I don't even drive my car in the rain.. much less the winter. Is it wrong to get a head start on the car, maybe buy my hood and fiberglass nose piece, and give the car that "work in progress" black primer paint "look"??

I see street rods at car show that do that... what do you guys think??

Just leave it man, it's not worth the work to sand it all down.

At least now people can respect it from 20' away. IMO it looks great in the pictures, especially on your www.link

IMO you'd be wasting time & money by stripping it and priming it, because once you get ready to actually paint it, you'll probably have to prep it and prime it again.

I'd leave the paint as is and focus on performance mods.

im gonna do the strip and black primer to mine too. Id rather have it look like a work in progress than a piece of crap.

based on the pics, I don't think his car looks like a piece of crap by any means.

That car looks horrible why don’t you just give it to me and get it out of your misery.

But seriously I WISH my car looked that good. I would keep it like it is and when everything else is done get it painted. There is no better protection than pain even what you call bad paint.

yeah man, i'd leave it. it looks fine for the time being. with all that work you're doing on it, I'm sure anyone that would see it would HAVE to think, this guys gonna have a killer paint job when he's done with the performance parts. Know what i mean?

Yeah, if it were 7 different colors, or had a bunch of surface rust or something, I'd tell you to primer it. But it's not that bad...

your car > primer

I guess I'm just being sensitive... people constantly ask me about it. And I can quietly here them point out the horrible prep job someone must have done.

I just like things done correctly.

Don't want to pick up that label of being a "hack".

Know what I mean?

try wet sanding it. 1000grit sand paper on a sanding block with LOTS of water. I think you will be impressed. If you dont like it....then go with the black primer look.

I had a 260z awhile back - same thing. I ended up primering the hood only in black and kinda liked it - sold it a week after I bought the 'stang (saw the light you know).

If you used the spray can primer you will be inviting rust. It is not a sealer. If you use a sealer type primer it would be as expensive as a decent paint job (trust me, I know). In either case the primer will retain some moisture and will wash off with any rains or washings. It will bleed onto other parts of the car and look like doo-doo.

If you must have the primer look, do it over the paint. That way moisture won't be an issue. That is what the PO did to mine. While a lot of people think it looks badass, I wouldn't mind having paint.

yeah you can always sprasy bomb it with black primer over that current paint, if you only do a couple of thin coats you can always wetsand it back off if you don't like it,would be a major PITA, but might work best for you in this situation

Even to do that, he would have to strip down all of the chrome trim and do a lot of tape off work. It's not worth it IMO.

unless hes like me and his paint is already flaking off in spots, then itd be a bad idea to primer over it.


btw bad67fun, i wasnt saying your car looked like crap, i was saying mine does

If you say your car's a 20 footer, then mine must be a 100 footer. Just like others have said, the pictures don't show how bad it is (if it really is). I'm in the same boat where the PO had a shop paint it & they didn't prep it very good. For me though, the paint is going to be the last thing I do. Engine & tranny was first, interior is going on now & then hopefully next year paint.

I drive a 20 footer too. But I keep it looking more like an 18 footer by using McGuire's Quik Detailer and Spray on Wax. Keeping it detailed as much as possible is good; tires, too. If someone complains, you can tell them it is a work in progress. I think your car looks better now than it would with primer unless that is what you want to do.....
